I purchased a HP d6700t with the following specs:
    t7250
    2gb ram
    160gb hd
    8400m

I have a chance to return this and buy a slightly better Dell Vostros for about the same price with the following specs:
    t8100
    3gb ram
    160gb hd
    8600m gt

I really like the looks of the HP over the Dell and I do not want to go through the hassle of returning it. At this point the HP specs are more than I need for my web browsing / casual gaming (BF2, Halo Etc) but it would be nice to have something a little more future friendly.

How does the HP's compare with the Vostros in terms of reliability, performance, etc..?

The Vostro would smoke the HP in gaming; the 8400 is not a good card for gaming, and the 8600 is significantly better. If you dont run many apps at once, then you probably wont notice the increase in ram, but that will still be nice.

If getting the Vostro will make you happy, then get it. I would personally have gone for the Vostro due to the far better graphics card. I think the Vostros look just fine, maybe not as flashy as the Pavillion, but I hate flashy things.

definitely shoot for the Vostro if the specs are better. i have an HP and i love it but i mean, It's not like the Dell is hideous, it's just plain.

I have played with the 6700t and the 9700t because I bought one and all I can say is just get the Vostro and be safe because gaming with the HP's isn't all that great.

To make you feel better, my HP is downstairs and today is the last day for it to be shipped so I'm taking it to FedEx for the return. Its not as bad as you think it is. It's like a 15 minutes process to return it.

Dell will take a lot less time to build and ship the laptop, and I know from experiance that they have better phone support than HP, as well as better hold times. Personally, I think the HP looks nicer and that was my deciding factor. Vain, I know.

Well, I'm in a similar HP vs Dell situation. After having to return 2 DV9700Ts, I have a third that just went in for repair after 32 days of owning it. I'm considering a Vostro myself and the current promotion makes it a sweet deal.

I'm glad to see this thread!

I just talked to a Dell salesman about the Vostros and he was totally against me buying it. He said he didn't know anything about them since they are the business side and they are very "clunky". Lol, sounds like they are running the promotion in hopes of getting people to buy a more expensive XPS laptop.

I am ordering the Vostro in the next couple of minutes. :)

:D I never even bother asking any salesman about their products...It reminds me of talking to a circuit city employee about one of their products... Hilarious
