try safe mode maybe?, why is it not booting to vista what is it saying, or does it say nothing and just keep booting to the recovery manager. Try hitting cancel in the Recovery manager and see if that helps on the next reboot.

Maybe someone has set recovery partition as an active partition. BIOS will first look for active partition.

you do have a option to run a backup from recovery manager right before you actually do the recovery (it uses windows backup and restore center) but I can't really recommend it. If worst comes to worst and the files are that important you may need to use a Linux live CD to try to access the HDD or even take the HDD out and hook it to another machine to try to pull the files off.

He can use a UBCDWin to boot to a win environment then set the C: as the active partition, then retry booting.

Search for UBCDWin to obtain, then after burning onne boot to CD and then select a drive tool to change the active partition.
