    Appreciate your help,
thanks for your effort to read through my problem:

    I have 2 year Hp dv5t (CPU = T5800 / GPU = 9600GT "512" / Ram = 4 G./ HDD. = 250 G. / OS = pre-installed Vista Home Premium SP2)

my problem is after booting the desktop freeze just the mouse pointer move but with no other response (right click, start menu, or any other action) for about 5-6 minutes  then the laptop start to work normally and with no other problem so as a temporary solution I mostly use hibernation.

Just to be clear I have this issue for a long time and I tried everything possible including uninstalling all pre-installed bloatware, (minimizing booting applications, services), updating all drivers, using different free and commercial tune up, optimization, and registry repair applications but with no luck.

I even disable all start up programs but with no success, the only program start up are three (Avast AV, Synaptic pointing device driver, Daemon tool lite).

my laptop is viruses and malwares free certified by Avast AV, Bit defender online, Hijack this, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

I know all will suggest clean install of OS. but that is unfortunately not an option as I have too many work files, application and client documents that are organized and saved in certain ways that re-install will require a lot of effort and may not worth the trouble, i.e., I better endure myself to booting lag than completely reinstall of OS.

Any idea what could cause this!!
    thanks

i had a similiar problem with a desktop, turned out i had bad sectors on the hard drive and something that was on startup was taken by those bad sectors so it would hang for a good amount of time before it started responding again..

I would scan for bad sectors

    thanks for quick response,
but I have done that and everything seems O.K. (no bad sector or other problem found)

by the way, I noticed that you have dv7tqe, what do you think of display quality as I was thinking of getting dv6tqe but many complain of display quality.

    regards.

I have not received the laptop yet, hopefully i will get it in the next few days!

I will let you know my impressions by then, in the meantime if you read the owners lounge there are people who have commented about the resolution and screen qualities..

    I'm out of ideas.

This is something thats difficult to pin point....

While its not responding, if you unplug and replug does that fix the issue? Also, what kind of mouse.

Yes it is very difficult to diagnose the problem since this lag also occur without connecting anything to laptop.
I just getting used to it.

I would suggest to defrag the drive using perfectdisk11.
If the problem still persists then press windows button+R and type in msconfig.Another window will open.Go to the startup tab and uncheck all programs that you dont want starting up with windows.
If this doesnt help as well, then you might consider formating and re-installing windows.

As for the screen quality of the DV6tqe i would say that it's not half bad. It's not 1080p but it's decent. It's only probem is the horrible viewing angles.

    thanks for your concern.
but unfortunately I tried everything you can think off i.e., defragmentation, disabling all boot programs and non-microsoft services, even tried new user account but no luck.
I can't figure out what can be the cause of the problem, even Event viewers doesn't provide a hint about the cause.
As for dv6tqe I was inclined towards Dell XPS 15 but unfortunately I didn't find it where I live with FHD display so I may have to settle with dv6tqe, but surprisingly when I handled the dv6 for few minutes, I found my hp dv5 of better build build quality and appeal, it may be just me I don't know.

You could always try a recovery (last resort I know) see if that fixes it.

how is your ram? is it 2x2gb? or just 1 4gb stick? i was thinking maybe you can remove one of the sticks and switch off to see if it's a memory problem.. just another idea since you've done almost everything..

    appreciate your reply,
it is 2x2gb. I tested the ram using microsoft memory diagnosis and hp maintenance memory check. No faults are reported and I didn't had any crashes or application errors or BDS (which may indicate faulty ram). nevertheless I'll try to remove one stick or switching, who knows!! ;)
