Hi I was just wandering how good the sound card on the dv6500t is?

Is it on par or better than the dell ones?

    Is it 7.1?

    Is there a 9-pin s-video for the s-pidif?

My 6500t will push my logitech speakers, model x-230. They are as loud as my desktop... bass and treble is very clear.

Far as dell, I've never owned a dell... far as 7.1, I don't know. All I know is that it sounds good and loud. Better than my last notebook, it would not even begin to push the logitech speakers for some reason (as in very little sound would come out the speakers).

No, in the dell's there is a 9-pin s-video which carries audio aswell! the standard i believe is 6-pin, so the extra pins are for sound!

Is there one in the hp's?

Keep in mind that the dv6500t has HDMI out too ;) So it'll put sound out that way as well.

Another thing to remember is that it will only output 5.1 sound that is already encoded in Dolby Digital and DTS. Everything else will be stereo. That goes for all laptop soundcards, unless you can find one that has real-time encoding or 5.1 analog outputs.

Since HP (and Dell and others) no longer use PCMCIA and have moved on to ExpressCard, you'll need to wait for Creative to get their ExpressCard soundcard out to get more than pre-encoded 5.1 or stereo sound.

Sound quality is actually pretty decent. Its surprisingly good at powering headphones. Though the overall quality isn't as good as a MacBook or an iPod for music.

I hate how they setup the speaker/mic jacks. Its very unergonomic to have it at the front. There is one way to solve this though... buy the HP quickdock.

Yeh I guess if I want to set it up with my home theater I'll hav to buy one of their port replicators, then it will be on the back!

Yeah the quick dock is pretty handy. It comes with extra ports aswell like S-video out (less pins than the integrated one), SPDIF port (bigger type jack), Composite video out (red, blue, green) and an extra inra-red port + the external ports for the integrated stuff (stereo, mic, lan, vga). Im not too sure on how to use it but it might come in handy for a home theatre setup
