 It all started when my dv9000 stopped detecting the DVDRW drive, i tried the same optical drive on a friend's laptop and it worked perfectly. I decided to go for an external DVD drive. After a while it stopped booting from the secondary hard drive (primary hard drive had crashed, so i installed vista on the secondary one). It detects the HDD, but it does not boot from it, the HDD is not even listed in the boot media list when you press f9 button at poweron. So i decided it was time to upgrade the bios, i entered my product number at the hp website, it gave a dv9627 as my model, in the bios its listed as a dv9500, so i downloaded the bios update for dv9500, boot from bootable USB Drive and did the upgrade. From then on my laptop never came on again. I found out about the crisis recovery tool, got a usb floppy drive, created the recovery disk, removed the battery held down the win + b first, plugged in power, powered on, left it for around 15mins, nothing happened, tried fn+b still nothing. The laptop screen just flickers once when i press the power button, power led on, hdd led comes on and then goes off, media button led are all on, other than that no sign of life, but the processor gets alittle hot so i suspect its still functioning. I really need help, i believe the bios can be recovered without sending the laptop to hp. I'm a student running on a really tight budget. Please help.

    Hi

    Unplug the following:

    -AC power
    -Battery pack
    -USB & all external devices

Now hold the power button for 30 seconds and try booting up again with AC power only. See if that works.

    Hi,
Thanks for your quick response, but i've tried that, it didn't work, that laptop is still as lifeless as ever except for the LEDs and the fan spinning. I don't know if the win+b or fn+b key combinations work to activate the bootblock on a dv9627, or if it has that feature...

Have you tried this and this guide?

Also another thing i would check is the CMOS battery.

    Hi flipfire,
I have tried that, the thing is there is no response whatsoever from the laptop.
    This is my procedure-
-removed all removable devices including DVD drive, HDD, battery pack.
-plugged in my USB flash drive, later the USB floppy drive.
    -removed power.
    -holding down win+b.
-with key still held down, i plugged in power, and pressed the power button.
Whether holding the fn+b or win+b, it does not try to access the USB drive neither does it access the floppy drive, it makes me wonder whether i need to use a diferent key combination with my model (hp dv9627) or it doesn't have the bootblock or the bootblock is corrupt. I've read a post about initiating the crisis recovery mode using the win+b key combination on a dv9080. Isn't there anyone who has recovered the BIOS on a hp dv9627 laptop before...

Try the different key combos. Also search google for a service manual.

    Try holding:
    ~
    TAB
    FN + ESC

I can't think of anything else ATM.

I think your (initial) issue had nothing to do with the BIOS, you're most likely looking at another failed nVidia chip.

Same here about the failed nvidia chip. My laptop stopped detecting the optical drive, then a month later suddenly died after going to sleep mode.
