A few months ago my lap top quit working. I took it to the computer guy and he installed Norton. I can use my lap top now but it has never been the same. I can't drag icons to or around the desk top any more. There is also this tool bar, like what you see in a folder, going up the left side of the screen. My sound buttons won't stay on the task bar any more, even when I go in and click "Place item on task bar."

All this I can live with, but last month my LCD screen quit working. I can see that it is on, the screen turns a pale gray, but no pictures. Once and a while it will work for a day or two, then "poof" its gone again. I have it connected to an external monitor and the computer is working ok. It had flickered for a week or so just before this happened. I can't help but think it may be a loose connection or can this be another problem that a virus can cause? My computer is just a year and 3 months old, but not under warrantee any more. Any help? Thanks in advance.

You may need to re-install your OS as there could be software/drivers in the system causing problems. The issue with the icons on your desktop may be because of a setting to lock your desktop items. This is easily fixable by right clicking the desktop & select Arrance Icons By, once that pops up, you should see "Lock Web Items On Desktop", just uncheck it and you should be set. If it doesn't fix it, it may have something to do wit hthe Norton's software that was installed.

If your screen goes gray but no video, it could be a setup problem. The screen going gray means that the backlight is still working, but nothing is being displayed. So for this, it's either set to goto an external video source, video card is defective or software/drivers in the system casuing some compatibility problems.

I'd recommend re-loading the OS from scratch as this will eliminate any driver/software problems in the system and will give you a clean OS to work with. Just make sure you backup all your data files.
