Greetings, I'm considering the HP6230 and the HP6125.
Would anyone be able to help here. Dont know much about AMD.
I would be comparing Both computers with top of the line processors, SXGA+, 1 GB Ram, 60-80 GB HD. I do Digital Photograpy and use Photoshop 7. This will serv as my Home system as well as my portable. I currently use a Thinkpad 21 which has served me well but I need more power and I fear it is only a matter of time before this machine will retire. I no longer think the build quality or the design of the IBM T series is as good as in the past. I've heard the 6000 series HP are solid and elegant. Who can help. Is the footprint of the 6125 that much bigger than the 6230 which size I do prefer? Thanks , Roberto

Hmm... the 6125 has a bigger screen, better CPU, costs less, but weighs a bit more... I'd get the 6125, between the two.

Acutually, I'd get the nc6230. The main reason is because the GPU in the nc6230 is a dedicated ATI x300, while the nx6125 has an ATI with shared video memory.

Ralfalla,
Anything with dedicated video memory should out perform one with shared video memory. Not only are you sharing the system ram with a shared video memory system, but you're also utilizing CPU resources and that will reduce overall system performance. There's also not a lot of apps/games out in the market that will utilize the full 128MB of video memory. The more video memory available, the more textures can be loaded in memory (increase of performance). But, when you load all these textures into slow system ram vs fast dedicated video memory, your graphics and system will become sluggish in comparison.

That's true, but the performance hit from the ATI shared memory GPU isn't as bad as you'd think. It's a few times faster than Intel's current shared memory GPU. Aquamark3 rated it at about 12,000 with an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU (desktop version, should be about the same as the notebook one), which is better than the GeForce 440 Go 64MB dedicated in the zv5000z series. Both the Radeon 200M and X300 are low-end parts. If you're serious about games, find a notebook with a X700 or better and be ready to pay for it. Otherwise I wouldn't automatically rule out the HP6125 because of its 200M.
