Hey all. I recently had an HDX16 and tried out a DM3, but ended up returning the DM3 because I simply wanted a bigger and more powerful setup. Well, I had gone through 3 previous HDX16s because of various issues. Now I get one of the last ones they made (I got it about a week ago but was out of town for Thanksgiving.) Anyways, there's a huge crack in the plastic on the long roundish bar that connects the screen to the laptop. I don't know what to do. I can call, but they can't even send out another replacement, as the 16 doesn't exist anymore. To me the DV6/7/8 series isn't even comparable in my mind. What does everyone think I should do? I get the feeling they'll offer me say $50 which isn't worth the crack. I mean to me $200 is about where I'd say I'd be okay. But even then, I'll use it every day and think of the crack.....

If anyone wants some photos, I can upload them. I was going through Vista setup and noticed a line, then upon closer inspection....huge crack.

you paid your hard earned dollars for this defective laptop and you're NOT considering sending it back?

without questioning your logic, i suggest you return the machine, suck it up, and get a diff model other than the dv6. if you ask them for a replacement dv6, and they dont have them anymore like you said, try to find other dv6's with similar config out on the web. otherwise, hp may give you a nice chunk off on a new dv7 or dv8 model. i know you dont like these models but if they give a significant enough discount, i think that'd be well worth the upgrade in size, IMO.

not having the unit is a better position to be in than having a damaged unit you paid full price for. (even if they give you $50 back, like you said, it would still bug the bejesus out of you every day you look at the machine...)

I agree 100%, I would return it and get my money back and go with another model. However I don't know how you feel about eBay but they have the HDX16t and HDX 18t on there BRAND NEW sealed in the box. You can always buy on there and buy an extended warranty through HP.

Now if your uncomfortable doing that then I would order directly from HP. The only current DV laptop that is better than the HDX series would be the DV8t. Features the new Core i7 processor. Everything else on it is the same except for the finish. It just doesn't have the backlit keyboard which was stupid on HP's part.

But yeah return it ASAP and get yourself another machine. Look around the HDX is still out there, you just can't get it from HP directly. It was only discontinued 2 months ago. Good luck :D

Well I do plan to return it but it's not as simple as say getting one from ebay. I got the deal of a lifetime on this hdx16. I paid less for it, than any laptop I've ever gotten. But I will call HP and see what they say.

Maybe not, but eBay does have good deals. Check around on there and maybe you'll surprised to what you find. The HDX is discontinued and maybe you'll find a price better than you originally paid.

I paid $650 for it, before taxes. As for the add-ons, I got the 1080P, blu-ray, 4GB ram, 320GB 7200RPM. Just to name a few. I doubt even eBay with Bing Cashback I could get that price. But even if I did, the problem is, how do we know there won't be a problem? I hope you know I'm not trying to be a smartas*. After going through 4 of these through HP, I don't know what to expect anymore. If I buy it from ebay, it's less likely for me to be able to return it to the seller.

Well most eBay sellers do offer a return policy. If you've gone through 4 HDX's then I would consider another notebook and just bite the bullet a little. The current pavilion line offers the new core i7 processors which blow the hdx away. Good luck hopefully it all works out for ya.

just my personal preference - i prefer buying straight from the company. there are many reputable ebay sellers out there but i am always weary of someone who buys refurbed/damaged/factory reconditioned laptops in huge lot sales and then put them on ebay as 'New in box' ... when you deal directly with the company, sure, the price may be higher but you have piece of mind knowing all the components in the laptop are new and not refurbed/reconditioned parts....

maybe im just paranoid... but my paranoia has never lead me in the wrong direction.

Completely understandable, I was just trying to make some suggestions for him because he stated he wanted the HDX 16 and it being no longer made I thought of eBay.

But honestly if I were him I would just return it, and go with another model and search for a good deal. There still is a good deal on the HP DV8t with a $500 off coupon. He would just have to get a mini with it.

Thanks guys. I got a call from an HP Case Manager. They dealt with it because of how many I had gone through. The resolution isn't perfect, but it's okay. They gave me a similarly configured dv6t Quad. Problem is the lack of the 1080p and the lack of a subwoofer, atleast I think the dv6t doesn't have one. Anyways, I mean i love the i7 processor and all that, but I was fine without it. I really will miss the 1080p though. I love that high resolution, and watching blu-rays with the subwoofer made them enjoyable. I travel frequently, so I was watching movies on flights, though it was hard at times to fit the laptop on the tray ;)

Because the 2" difference is significant. If someone says otherwise, they are just trying to fool you :p

Well two reasons. Firstly as KLF stated, it's significant. I have an HDX18...I got the 16 for a reason ;) Secondly, and more importantly, the case manager said the comparable replacement is the dv6, so that was the only option. I tried for Envy 15, I mean why not right? But he shot that down. The dv8 is actually similarly priced, but same thing, he said only the dv6.

The DV6 is not a comparable replacement. The HDX 16 has a subwoofer, better exterior design, and a better screen. Ultra Brightview Infinity when the DV6 just uses Brightview.

Well you talk to them then! That's what I said.....I tried arguing my point. He wouldn't go for it. I mean, really what else could I have done? I know it's not a comparable replacement, there really isn't, other than say the Envy 15. But he wouldn't go for it, and I wasn't in the mood to argue.
