If you purchase an SSD / HDD combo drive from HP in your new notebook and it arrived in RAID 0 mode...here is how to fix it.

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DHHGWUL4

You can download the file and do the repair. Takes a few hours, but better than sending your machine in for a refund...

Wish the mods would sticky this...seems that the 3rd gen Envy is going to have this issue as well...

Looks like many of you might see machines this week. Wanted this to be where you could find it, if needed...

I can't download this file from work, so maybe the details are in there, but I'll ask here anyways...

Does this apply to dual mechanial drives? My laptop comes with dual 500GB drives. I was hoping to replace one of the drives with a SSD. Have the OS and Programs installed on the SSD... and My Documents/Music on the 500GB drive.

    Advice?

It should. The document covers breaking down a raid array and reinstalling onto independent drives. When HP was first shipping the SSD+HDD combo's, they were striping between the two devices which was a big no-no. Those of us who were caught in this situation had to fix the problem ourselves. HP no longer ships this invalid configuration and those people who had striped HDD's really don't want to undo the array as speed suffers. However, since you are replacing a HDD with a SDD, then you will want to perform this process.

Thanks cam. Yeah, right now my C drive shows 1TB. So I first need to undo the array, as described in the how-to, then I can figure out how to install the SSD.

After your SSD is installed in the laptop, it really should be a breeze if you follow the guide. I personally used my recovery media to reinstall the laptop from scratch when I first got mine and broke the stripe down. The only gotcha is the need to fix the MBR and BootSector which the document explains how to do.

The only other thing you *might* run into is if you are installing a smaller SSD. Some people who installed 64-80GB SSDs (or less) found that the base recovery won't fit properly due to the way the HP recovery works. Those people had to perform a minimal recovery from the HP restore and then reinstall some software (like tridef). I used my original 160GB SSD and didn't have any problems restoring the full HP image (other than the bootsector issue). If you are installing a smaller drive, I'd also recommend backing up your SWSETUP folder to USB flash before breaking the stripe. If you do a full image restore, you won't need the SWSETUP folder, but its still best to be prepared for the worst.

    Good luck.

Well I just decided to removed my SSD/HDD RAID setup HP sent me.(Realized I wasn't even getting use of 750GB in that config. Real quick, can someone tell me what the problem was/is that Bobmitch was fixing? I have a 750+300SSD setup. I'm replacing the 750 with a 1TB and would like my OS on the SSD. I know how to do that, but I'm trying to figure out if there is anything unusual about this Envy 17 3d (2xxx) that I should know... if so would you be able to send me aforementioned program?

    Thanks!

So what is the problem that this guide fixing? What is the "big no-no"?

A post on the first page mentioned something about RAID 0 striping. I have an Envy 4 with a 500GB HDD and a 32GB SSD that shows up as a Raid 0 configuration. Is this a bad configuration? What is the correct set up for the drives?

Why not just post the guide on the forum?

    1. When you stipe a 500 GB HDD with a 32 GB SSD...you get 64GB of space. RAID 0 defaults to the size of the smallest drive and also the speed of the slowest drive.
    2. I wanted to post the file here over a year ago. Asked the moderators for a way to do that. Never got any interest or responses. At the time, I was forced to use an online space for people to download. Now, that's gone. So I have just been sending to people privately.

    Two questions:

First, can I get a copy of the guide at supergreen26 at yahoo dot com?

Second, I have a new HP Envy 17t-j000 with the combo 32gb SSD+1tb HD. What are the advantages/disadvantage of running it in RAID0 vs. Non-RAID config? I originally tried to do a dual-boot Win7 and Win8 but could not with the original RAID0 config. Broke the RAID successfully and was able to set up the dual boot, but now can't make use of the SSD (32gb isn't big enough to do anything these days...). Looking to reset it all back to factory default and play with the RAID0 config to see if I can make it work since I have figured a few things out now...

The file should be in your email now. As far as benefit to RAID...you double the throughput. Tom's hardware even showed the benefits of RAID using two SSD's. It is a benefit. Many will say "Oh, but you run the risk of losing all your data"...true, but if your HDD goes belly up...you lose it anyway. Best thing to do is backup your system weekly and never lose anything...you can always restore. If you RAID an SSD and HDD together...your speed is only double that of the HDD. RAID will default to the speed of the slowest drive...not recommended. In my Envy 17-2100 and even in my desktop...I do dual drive configurations...where C is my Samsung 830 SSD and contains OS and main programs like Nero, Office and the like. D drive is for Steam, Uplay and Origin games and secondary programs. RAID is a choice. To me...the Samsung SSD's are fast enough and the dual drive combination works really well together. Your choice

    Hi Bobmitch,

I think my friend's laptop ran into the same problem...

The ENVY 17 and it came with RAID 0 with 2 regular 500GB HDD, 1 of it went bad and I bought a SSD to replace that.

Since the SSD is only 128GB, and I prefer to disable the RAIO 0, can I do that with your guide?

Or this laptop must be running with RAID setup?

If your trick work in my case, can you also send me that file to my email address? Thanks.

All you need do is put the REVO in the C bay and run the recovery. The software will take care of the rest. I just did a fresh recovery on my 2nd Gen and it is flawless. Your REVO will be drive C: and the HDD will be D: or E: You can always change the drive letters of the second drive and the DVD/BR drive. Pretty much taken care of for you...
