My brother did a factory restore on his new HP laptop, and things just wouldn't work. He called HP and not only did they send him a new recovery disk without hesitation, but they actually helped him through the process without lines like "We at [OEM] are very sorry you are experiencing this problem, Mr. [last name]. Please wait while I gather information to further assist you."

But that's not the impressive part.

I actually started the support ticket for him, as I was the one who suggested a clean install and I happen to know much more about computers than him. Anyway, I was just sitting here on my computer a few minutes ago (8:40 PM on a Sunday) and HP called me entirely unsolicited just to see how the problem was going. Incredible.

Now, I'm not thrilled with HP machines (in fact, I quit considering HP when the acquired Compaq), but I am very satisfied with their customer support - even if it is outsourced.

If only Sony offered that level of dedication...

They aren't as bad as people make them out to be. I actually hung up on them once because I solved the problem half way though, and they called me back from Rochester, NY to help me solve my problem.

It took me several hours of chat, numerous emails and over 30 minutes on the phone to finally (after 6 weeks) get a lousy rubber bumper that fell off my tx1000. So, counterpoint (and not to pee in your Cheerios, glad your experience was good), I hate HP support.

You know guys, they are really, really good if you got right person in there. I have spoken with many of them and sometimes a real idiots are on the phone, but most of the time a real professionals in this sphere. So, good luck - but I am sure you will get a real pro-support!

I have been a long time Compaq/HP customer, but recently my purchases are limited to the commercial units. My current rig will be three on the 23rd and has run MSs latest three OSes without performance issues. The support has always been great. Having owned units from all the other major manufacturers (save for IBM/Lenovo) and dealt with their support I give HP kudos. I always get a real person within 3 - 5 min of the initial call, and my issues are readily resolved with on-site repair or troubleshooting depending on the problem. I side with the OP and say HP does a great job.
