So I recently filled out one of those, "help me buy a laptop" guides and the one response I got told me to look at the hp dv5000 and dv8000 series. Well I saw a deal I like at office depot and jumped on it. I just ordered the computer about 30 minutes ago. The total price was about $790 after rebates, shipping, tax, and all that stuff.

    Here everything I got:
    15.4" brightview widescreen
    Turion ML-32
    512 mb ram (1 dimm)
    80 gb 5400 rpm
    dvd rw with lightscribe
128 mb ATi 200m graphics and extra usb, firewire, and cardreader
    54g wireless
    hp all in one printer
one year of norton internet security

I still have a couple questions though...

    1) I choose to get the ram in one stick because i plan on maybe adding another later. Does anyone know exactly what kind the dv5000z uses?

    2) Does anyone have any estimate as to how long it will take for my computer to arrive?

    3) Was it a good deal?

    thanks for your help.

    1. I would get the smallest amount of memory you can (the cheapest) and get your memory from newegg
    2. most are 10days + shipping time
    3. You should get intel instead

    1. HP uses 200pin DDR333(PC2700) SODIMMs. You can use DDR400(PC3200) SODIMM's as well.

    2. It should in most cases ship before the estimated due date. Thats been the case with HP's shipment these days.

    3. Nice deal, considering the extra stuff you got.

    1. Buy one of these 512MB or 1GB PC3200 SODIMMs. Your notebook will come with a PC2700 stick, forcing the new one into PC2700 mode, but with PC2700 and PC3200 at the same price you might as well buy PC3200. I put two Crucial 1GB PC3200's in my dv8000z.

    3. Good deal, and 64-bit Vista ready.

For anyone wanting to know what kind of memory their machine uses try : http://www.crucial.com/index.asp to find out the kind, the specs.

Like the above posters have said within the SAME type of memory type you can use a FASTER ram stick along with the slower spec'd stick. It will run at the same speed as the slower spec'd stick, but in most cases the higher spec'd stick may be priced the same or even cheaper than the lower spec'd chip due what the market is using the most of at the time.

If you're looking for DDR-2 ram keep in mind they have to be installed as "matched" sets so it will run in DDR-2 mode.

DV5000 does not support dual channel or DDR2 memory.

    monkeysings,

Please when quoting me use the "quote" button.

To answer your question, IF your machine takes DDR-2 ram it needs to be installed in matched sets for it to run in DDR-2 mode.
