I agonized over buying a Dell, but ended up keeping the Pavillion 6775US model laptop I bought from Best Buy for $899. It does most of what I want, but I do wish HP made faster models available here in Canada. HPShopping.ca is unfortunately an utter joke compared to the US counterpart. In fact, it's not really set up at all for buying laptops online. All you get are links to resellers and that's it. There might be one or two models that can be bought, but not customized. Stores like Best Buy seem to generally sell T5450 1.67ghz category laptops with intel integrated graphics. The HP Pavillions are a rare exception by having the 256mb 8400GS video. The most annoying thing is that there are just way too many variants of the HP laptops and each is only slightly different from the other. Differences may only be the amount of ram it has or the size of the hard drive. My 6775US model laptop has 3gb ram, 250gb HD, intel wireless AGN, 8400GS video, dual layer burner and an LG 15.4 glossy display. I do appreciate the build quality, design and even having the touchpad in the center of the palmrest so my left hand isn't resting on the edge of the keyboard. The remote control is a really nice touch as well. People complain that the 8400GS is a poor video card, but it's actually fairly good for casual gaming. I loaded up FEAR and Doom3 and performance was more than acceptable. I didn't really buy a laptop for games since that's what I have my xbox360 for nowadays. It's still nice to load up some of the older games I have and the laptop is more than capable of playing them really well.
Just like buying a desktop, there's always something better and more expensive. A person has to draw the line somewhere and overall I'm fairly happy with my HP. I didn't spend A LOT and it has some nice features. As long as it does what I need, that's what counts.
