So I have had my new dv9000t for about one week or so. I really like this computer. When I configured it I got a 80GB HD because with my last laptop ( Dell) the usage never went above 10 or 11 GB....
Although I have gotten rid of all the bloatware I wanted...I am still showing over 18GB of used hard drive plus the 12 used for the recovery drive...leaving me only about 44GB left...and I just got the computer.
Should I return this unit to Costco ( where I bought it) and get a bigger hard drive. I just don't know what I will need in the future.

The dv9000t has the ability to have dual hard drives. So, if you need the extra space then consider adding the second HDD.

Since you ask, to special order something then to return it because you screwed up the order is, well, sort of unethical. Sure it's within the rules but gee wiz, you picked the components.
You don't mention what OS your old system was running. You can remove the 12gb recovery partition if you want as long as you have taken proper precautions by creating recovery disks, etc...also the SWSETUP directory has a fair amount of stuff in it that can be moved to disk and deleted if you want. But just be sure to understand how to recover your system before these changes. Between the two it should get you another 15-18gb depending on the size of the SWSETUP directory.
But, dude you configured the system nobody was holding a gun to your head...like already suggested I would just add a 2nd HDD if you need the space. -
Will changing the HD void warranty?. But, for me when i brought my notebook i got a 120GIG and in two months it was filled to capacity. So i guess it will be mainly what type of work you are doing, and how much space are required for that work and a little for reserve. Here are my suggestions:
-Burn your recovery discs and delete the partition so as to get back the space. If you see later down the road you need more space get the bigger HD.
-Does changing the HD now cost more or less?
-Add a second HD!
The choice is yours. -
just return it. Tell them your drive is missing 14 gigs of usable space that you really needed.

You can return it or you can buy an extra drive and replace the current one, using the 80GB as a backup drive with a USB case.

burn the recovery partition onto 3 black dvds and then delete it from the hard drive. i did it and now i have 74.3gigs

You can always put a second HD in later to go along with the existing 80GB drive.
Notebook hard drives have absolutely TANKED in price online. Just check NewEgg when you're ready to order another one. -

it won't merge it. once you install it and go under my computer it will show 2 icons which are the hard drives. you won't need to d.l an OS for it but i think you might have to format it. you would also have to buy a bracket to hold the HD in place. its rare to find outside of hp but they sell it for $39

Vista takes up a lot of hard drive space. your recovery partition is killing you as well. plus you could gain some GB by burning the SWSETUP folder and then deleting it.
Once you've burned and deleted the recovery partition, aas well as the swsetup folder, i think you should have about 60 something GB left over. -
Why not just get an external hard-drive? If you want to get a bigger one, though, that's understandable.

(...sorry, couldn't resist)
I like my new dv9000t. But my 80GB HD I think is too small. Should I return to Costco?
