And it seems there is always a BUT! Currently its the Windows 8 thing. Hp has not tested these for Windows 8 and they are playing it close to the vest as well. We dont know when and if they will test it and provide an update to the bios that will enable this upgrade. Well I been around HP long enough to know that I am not holding my breath. They may get to it but they will not gife you a heads up on when or even if it will happen so they creat anger and anxiety in their customers and dont even seem to care. Have you been to the support forum over at HP? If so then you know what I mean. They rarely even show up on their own support forum to answer a question. BUT I do like this notebook! It is just so frustraiting dealing with HP and resolving any issues. I just hope they get this Windows 8 issue dealt with soon so we can upgrade if we choose. My unit is not that old! Its still under warrenty! Why is there such an issue with this in the first place? HP is really makeing me think twice about who I buy from in the future.

What are the "this issue" that you are talking about? You swear and complain about it, but not say anything about the problem...

I guess you must have not read that part of the post.. Anyway it has been a medley of things one after another since I started using HP products and lots of lame tech service to go along with it. I cant believe that you have not had the same experience with them as I have. It may be the same as this with other brands but they just rub me the wrong way too too many times. Sorry for the rant but you need to walk a mile in my shoes to understand I guess. It seems to me that a notebook that is not even out of warrenty yet would be a priority to HP to update the BIOS so that their customers could upgrade their machine to Windows 8 if they desireed to do so. There are others that want to upgrade to Win 8 wiith this model also that cant because HP is not taking care of business. It is not just this! I have had many issues with HP and am seriously rethinking continued support of the brand.

I assume, you have bios compatibility issues? Still not clear, because you quoted "this thing" and "that things" and then another 8 line swearing

I have no issues with my hp out of the box. Comes with Windows 7 then as soon as Windows 8 debuts I upgraded. Not a bit of issue here.

You don't need a BIOS update for Windows 8 compatibility.

I do not know if I have BIOS compatability issues? I only know what HP said and am wondering if others have upgraded to Win 8 and had no issues with the 2nd gen Sandy Bridge systems. So you are running Windows 8 on your 2nd Gen model with no problems. That is the type of info I am looking for and I appreciate your input. Maybe you have not seen the statement that HP put out about upgrading to Windows8 and its seemingly cautious language about the upgrade for untested models. Im just trying to get some feedback from others before trying the upgrade on my mission critical notebook.

I am sorry if I have offended you wit my rant on HP about this. I do not see it as "swearing" though. I am simply expressing my opinion on the way they are handeling this and several other issues that have come up in the past with HP. Swearing would involve the use of some 4 letter words. I did not use any of these that I am aware of. I do admit that I am not pleased with HP service and that there is somewhat of a rant going on here about HP but I have yet to begin SWEARING.

Sorry fishcrazy if I offended you, I didn't want to, but I couldn't see the reason for the topic. Now I see what's this about.

I personally never experience any problems with HP, and the upgrade to Windows 8 was fast and easy. Second Generation Core i7 as you can see in my signature with switchable graphics. Finally HP provided the perfect driver for the AMD card so I can get rid of some Leshcat issues at least. With the newest HP version of Catalyst I can use Dynamic or Switchable mode without any issue.

I think this whole W8 issue with HP is about some older models... maybe the ones with the 5650 or the older 4650 cards and/or other older components. For example the wifi-bluetooth is always can be a problem, because its nearly impossible to upgrade in the dv series (because of the whitelist for wifi cards in the bios -> lack of driver support for older ones) But this is a guess.

xAcid9 I have not tried to on my notebook yet but I did put it on an HP desktop I have and it seems to be working fine. I downloaded the ISO to the desktop and burned it to disk and did a custome install on the desktop . It let me format the drive and use the whole thing as one partition and installed Windows 8 clean with none of the bloatware from the original install. That was what I wanted to find out. I wanted to do a clean install and not an upgrade. I need to bring that computer back to original spec though now since it is my wifes and she wants her software back. Glad I have the recovery disk that I made. I think I will do a upgrade though with Win 8 after I put the system back on and update it. I wonder if it matters if I update the old operating system before I upgrade to Windows 8?
