Heys Guys,
I have been recently facing a problem with my PAV HP 6599 notebook (2 months old), the DVD drive does not get detected by windows vista.
It was working perfectly but in the last few days it does not get detected at times (keep in mind the cd drive can be ejected normally, and i can notice it reading the cd) but it does not get detected by windows & i can find it on device manager.
i tried everything to no avail? what went wrong?
p.s. at times the cd drive gets detected again only to disapper a while later.
any ideas (the HP SUPPORT IS USELESS)

These are the things I would do, in order:
1) Have an antivirus program run on your computer (a full scan, not a quick one). Do the same with a spyware program.
If anything is detected, quarantine/heal/remove (if necessary), restart, and see what happens.
If that doesn't find anything,
2) Reinstall the drivers for your DVD-ROM drive. Probably the best way to do this is to find your drive by going to Start / Control Panel / System and Maintenance / System / Device Manager (along left bar). Find your DVD drive, double-click on the drive, then click the Driver tab, then click Update Driver. Have it search over the internet.
If it can't find anything that way, then...
3) Use the System Restore to restore to a point before the events that you described occur.
Honestly, I've seen viruses do this to DVD drivers, I've also seen the drivers themselves become corrupt and do this (although usually they don't do it intermittently, they just go out completely). And I've seen some Windows updates to do this as well. Good luck, and if you happen to notice anything else that could be a clue, please keep us posted. -
I would suggest reseating the drive.
You might also try clearing the upper and lower filters on the DVD drive. Normally filter problems cause the drive to disappear for good, but it's always a possibility.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325-11*CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
1. Click on the start menu.
2. In the search box, type in “regedit” without the quotation marks.
3. Maximize the HKLM and then browse until you reach the key listed above.
4. In the right panel you’ll see something along the lines of “UpperFilter” and “LowerFilter” you want to click on each “filter” key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.
PLEASE NOTE: your system may only have one or the other. This is OK.
5. Restart Windows. -
have you install anything new on the laptop. have you tryed restoring back to a later date? -
I've tried searching for "regedit" without the qoutations.
but havent found anything? Is it cause im using windows vista? whatS HKLM?
I'm a complete noob so please excuse my ignorance.
can u guide me in baby steps....
Note, I've tried the virus can (nothing found), the drive does not appear in device manager and when it does there are no new updates.
did system restore but the problem is still there the dvd would be working for a second, and the next min its gone.
Thain you are my last hope! -
HKLM = HKey Local Machine
If you turned it on and the drive appears in the Hardware Device.. delete it and reboot.
You probably either updated the driver or installed a program that conflicted with the drive, maybe a multimedia software.
You can take out the drive and clean the connectors. -
Try this. Hold your windows logo key down and press "R." This should bring up a command box. Then type in "regedit" (no quotes) and press "OK." This should bring up registry editor, then just follow the directions above

i sorta had the same problem on my compaq. It did the same symptoms as yours and it wouldnt read DVD's even though it was a DVD drive, it would only read cd's at times
Turned out it was a faulty drive.. could be different problem from urs though -
try removing the drive from hardware manager and reinstall the driver

I had the same thing happen with my DVD drive just last week. It would load dvd/cd, spin it up, but still couldn't detect it in Vista. Even refused to boot from bootable cd. I did all of the things recommended by previous posters and none of them worked. Then when I was just about convinced my drive was dead I did a hard reset (remove power cord and battery, hold power button down for 30 sec) I also reset bios to default configuration. To my surprise drive came back to life and has been fine ever since.
I'm Facing a problem!! HELP!
