    here in the UK both these units are being released soon. They cost about the same with the compaq being £40-50 pounds cheaper ($80-90 dollars) between £900-950, both of them have similar specs;

    AMD 3500+,
    1GB Ram,
    100GB 4200rpm HD,
    15.4" brightview Screen,
    Ati X200m Gpu with 128mb Ram Dedicated,
    Dual Layer DVD writer with +&- support,
    802.11b/g wifi with 125HSM/SpeedBooster,
    8 cell battery
    and 6 in 1 media card reader.

    i'm not sure whether the compaq has an express card slot or infared, which the HP will have. This would be a deal clincher for me.

    but which if any would be better???... does the design of the HP make it quiter and cooler (less heat) or is it just cosmetic??? and should i just go for the better value???...

    please help... Thanks [ :D]

    If the specifications are the same then just pick the case design you like. AFAIK the chassis designs are just cosmetic and there would be no reduction of heat in the HP design.

    It seems that the Compaq does not have the Infra-red but they list the expresscard slot along with the 128MB dedicated memory.

    i disagree. I first bought the HP ZV6005 and brought it home. When I pulled it out of the box the first thing i noticed was how huge it was. My roomate kept giving me a hard time saying how ugly it was. And even though I got a good deal on it, i thought he's right. This thing is not attractive. Not ugly, but not attractive. Plus it has this cheap plastic latch that you use to open the notebook. I figured this thing will break in about a year. I also didn't like the plastic silver cover. It just looks really cheap to me. So i thought, I want to see what the compaq looks like. When i saw it I was impressed with the case. It's solid. To open it has this big button that allows you to open the notebook and it doesn't look breakable like the HP. And the keyboard section is this nice silver. Kind of reminds me of the powerbook. I didn't like the fact that it's black on the outside, but I think it looks way better than a lot of laptops that i've seen on the market. Plus it's got a solid build. And it's a little smaller then the hp. Probably the same weight, but it's smaller, more compact and easier to carry.

    PS. yesterday I was walking by starbucks and this guy had his HP at his table, when I saw it I was thinking "thank god I took that back", cuz my roomate was right..

    I guess I'm the opposite. I like the Compaq when it's closed, but the HP when it's open. I originally ordered the Compaq, but wound up with the HP (long story). Anyway, I was initially disappointed in the exterior of the HP, but found that I liked the inside of the HP better. Plus, the curved front of the HP is pretty comfortable for typing. I guess I like black surfaces more than silver surfaces, but it's all just based on preference.

    The HP does seem big, but that doesn't really bother me. It's light enough for me to carry it around, which I do on rare occasions. I know the style today is for smaller and smaller gadgets, but I don't really want a computer that's too small. Plus these units are marketed as desktop replacements, so they're not intended to be small.

    Good thing we have so many choices these days!
