If I do anything intense like video editing it will be very rare. This will be mostly a surfing machine :) I really want a 17" and a Core 2 Duo but with a budget of about 1250, I don't think I can have both. Processor aside, the 17" seem to have better battery life so I'm leaning that way. I'm very close to pushing the button on a DV9210US with Turion TL-52, 2 GB ram, 120GB HD, DVD burner and Vista. The only weak link is the video GeForce Go 6150. Amazon has some pretty sweet deals right now so I can pick it up for 1099.00 after 150.00 in rebates

For about the same money I can get a core2 duo 15" with 1 GB ram

I guess I just need a little approval from you guys on the Turion. Any feedback would be appreciated

Good choice. I have a lesser model (dv9008nr) and I've been happy with it. The Go 6150 is one of the best shared memory GPUs out there, fine for anything short of gaming, and even then if you cut the resolution back far enough it may suffice. It's vastly better than the Intel GPUs you may be familiar with. You will definitely want 2GB RAM for Vista.

Well I say you should go for it.

My system (one in signature) has worked fine for my web surfing, IM'ing and CD/DVD burning needs. The video in mine is very close in performance to yours I believe and it plays a decent game of world of warcraft and halflife 2 and such.

You will love the 17-inch screen! So much space for multiple windows and such. Be sure to bump her up to 2gig of ram. I cannot tell you of the Vista performance as I have yet to gather the money for a copy but as soon as I do I will let you all know how it runs.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy whatever system you go with!

I was very impressed by almost every aspect of this hp dv9210us computer. Nice power and value for the price. I think I will be returning however, because the upper surface near the slide pad, which is made of metal, has gotten so HOT after several hours of running plugged in, it is starting to get really uncomfortable on my hands as I sit here and type this note. It is one thing for the bottom to be hot, but the place you rest your hands all day while your typing should not be SOOO warm. I would estimate at least 95 degrees. Not so hot as to burn you but, still....

I was down at my local Fry's at lunch today looking at 17" notebooks for my father in law.

requirements: 17" screen, integrated 10-key with the keyboard, webcam, 2GB of ram for Vista, Vista premium

The HP dv9210us hit all of these on the mark, and at $1,099 at my local store I felt that it was extremely competitively priced. There was another HP they had, I didn't get the model number, but it was essentiall the same as the 9210 but with discrete video and Core 2 Duo. Many people would find this advantageous, even with the ~ $300 higher price tag. But as a machine that will spend the bulk of it's time for web, email, light OpenOffice, etc, the 9210 is more than enough computer. Especially for the money.

We're going to buy it this week.

timeotech: the HD sits under that spot. HP added vents to the HD bays, is anything blocking them? You might have been unlucky and been given a particularly hot-running HD model. The Seagate drive in my notebook doesn't get terribly hot.

Thanks for the feedback. I DO believe it is a fine machine and it was on my short list. In the end I went for the dv9220US with Core2 Duo, 2GB ram, dual 80GB HD, GeForce 7600.... for 1299.00 at Amazon after 150.00 in rebates (Amazon has reliable rebates) no tax & free shipping. I could not find a better deal on this machine anywhere & I couldn't pass on it. Same deal on the DV9010US $1099.00 AR, also a pretty smokin' deal
