Just a little bit ago, I installed the update for IDT HD Audio (it prompted me to in windows update) and I have been disappointed.
My most important problem: The audio sounds fine though the built-in speakers, however the sound though my headphones (provided by the Independent Dual Headphones profile) is inexcusably quiet. At max volume, it is only at comfortable listening levels. Any ideas?
On the other hand, I am glad that it finally switches profiles automatically when I plug in a device via mini-jack.ā
The second issue is the "SRS Premium" feature not working properly: I bought my laptop before they started doing that whole thing, so mine does not have an SRS badge by the speakers like others I have seen, but the update gave me the feature so I just expected that it would work. Thing is, the sliders are all messed up, I can't get it to stay at the percentage that I set it at (screen/app refreshes reset the sliders back to 0%). And even at that, if I manage to get a slider up to 80% whatever, it makes no difference in sound. I tried changing songs in case it wasn't real-time updating but that didn't work either. This isn't a huge deal to me, but it would be nice if it worked anyways.

I tried the microsoft recommended IDT audio updates back when I was trying to get xp working. Needless to say they stunk real bad and failed to work. I googled around and tons of people had the same problem of the audio basically not working after updating. Steer clear of microsoft driver updates like the plague and go direct to the component brand - nvidia, intel etc.
To get the latest driver with SRS functionality just go to http://www.hp.com/#Support type in your laptop model and follow the steps to get the latest IDT driver that actually works.
Here's the latest IDT audio driver I'm using http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3756657&os=2093&lang=en
"Enhancements: Adds support for SRS Audio Technologies"
Compatibility: Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Business (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit) -
Thanks for the reply.
I followed your first link and the IDT driver that HP presents for my laptop is not the same as the one you have.
Mine: 6.10.6087.0 B
Yours: 6.10.6087.0 Cā
Think I would have issues using the one recommended for your laptop? My OS is supported.
I have AMD and ATI, so maybe the chipset is a bit different and that would be why they recommend a different version? -
I think you could always give the driver for the intel based laptop a go. I don't think there would be anything much to worry about. If it fails to work properly just uninstall it using add/remove programs.

DON'T Update IDT driver from microsoft it ruined my settings , now i can't listen to music while playing games even if i unchecked allow programs to use drivers exclusively.

You should never allow Windows Update to install any kind of driver, especially on OEM machines. There's the option to tell WU not to look for driver updates, use it.
The driver Grantman recommended should be just fine. -
Wow seems pretty unanimous that I should turn update off
I kinda strayed from the computer world for a while, I guess I missed the memo.
Unfortunately, the software for Grantman's computer for some reason "doesn't support my hardware" and won't let me install.
I'll search around on the official IDT website as soon as I get some time. Hopefully HP's version is corrupt or something (unlikely, but I can hope)
Then again, it's probably my stupid 64-bit OS. Damn thing causes problems around every corner and I notice absolutely no performance advantage.
I have been toying with the idea of doing a reformat sometime this month--still have original install, just got rid of most of the bloatware. It's kinda thick yet though. Fresh start would be nice, but I'm worried about the drivers of course..
Other ideas still welcome -
Never had any major trouble with 64-bit, most certainly no problems with driver availability atm. Maybe the version Grantman linked to was for 32-bit?

could be the intel/amd chipset difference. For the DV4-1155se in your signature this is the 64 bit driver HP recommend:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3795310&os=2100&lang=en
Released: 2008-11-14
Version: 6.10.6087.0 B
Compatibility: Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Business (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Business (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Starter, Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit)
I'd go to add remove programs and remove whatever's there before installing this driver. -
The other day, Windows Update took control without me knowing and installed another update for IDT. I don't have the SRS anymore but everything works as it did before.
I'm guessing it rolled back the driver. Maybe their working on a fix? I guess I don't really care as long as it works.
Anyways, it'll do for now.
Thanks for the help.
