I've done a clean install of a HP 4720s for XP, everything is fine, except the audio, there are no Windows sounds, and in the Device Manager I see that IDT High Definition Audio CODEC is not installed, I've tried to find the driver, windows update, re-install the audio driver, but nothing helps.

    Any ideas?

What is the version of the audio driver that you are trying to install?

The default driver that is available for your notebook is version 5.10.6261.0 and is found at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=ob-80680-1.

Also, have you tried the newest driver that is currently available by HP for business notebooks? It has Windows XP driver files looking at its package contents. I think the driver version is now at 5.10.6289.0.

Well, I did a new clean install, ran the Application and Driver Recovery DVD, selected ALL and now everything works.

You know, I installed this CODEC yesterday on my machine (dv7-1267cl) from HP's driver site and it completely crapified the sound from the speakers for some reason--made it very tinny and muddy for some reason. I had to use up a system restore to get the full speaker sound I was getting before. Is there anything I'm missing out on by not having the IDT CODEC installed?

If the IDT Audio Codec is not installed, I don't think you can use the audio jacks. Aside from this and the absence of an IDT control panel that controls the audio settings, there isn't much else you're currently missing out on.

Thankfully the audio jacks are working fine.
