I have a dv6700t laptop with windows vista ultimate, I want to run vista and xp, but I don't want to order xp pro from Newegg because it is expensive, and I found a bottom case from a dv6700t that has a windows xp pro proof of license with a cd key. I was wondering if it will work with my hp. Thanks Ivan

It may work, but it's illegal.
You may as well just d/l a crack, but that's as much information as you're going to get from here.

Why should it be illegal when I will be getting the license sticker?

    1) The sticker is not a license, it's simply a note in case the original owner needs to reinstall, so they have the key close by.

    2) OEM licenses are non transferable. That license was originally on a different pc, and legally it may not be swapped to another pc.

Where does it say that it is nontransferable?

I think you might be OK if the the OEM license and hardware are pre August 2006, which is when MS changed the OEM license agreement. The old agreement allowed for transfer with "hardware," although I'm not sure a case bottom would qualify. The new agreement only allows for selling the "computer" with OEM OS one time to another user. You would still have to ensure the license activation number would not still be in use. I believe there are some sellers on eBay legitimately selling old hardware + OEM license under the old terms. Worth checking it out further..

Regardless, the way to do it is to ignore the sticker and use or make a standard HP WinXP disc. If it installs preactivated, your BIOS is licensed. If not, you'll have to buy a license. I'm pretty sure it'll work. There are various threads on making a HP WinXP SP3 install disc if you need to. I won't 100% swear to the legality since IANAL but since no cracking is involved...?
