Speaking of batteries, has anyone found a good outlet for extended batteries. I can't seem to find one for the HDX 18. You'd think manufacturers would make them readily available for these desktop replacements. Even in economy setting I barely get 2 hours before my regular battery runs dry.

Walmart has some universal batteries they are square and fit under your laptop.

LOL, I don't think I'm quite ready to go back to the piece meal look right now. You should have seen my laptop before I replaced it. That thing was held together with bailing wire and duct tape. Perhaps in a few years though? :D

They are out there if you buy from HP it will be about $180. the extra cells extend from the bottom making the laptop a bit bulkier. Or you could just get an extra one put your laptop in hibernate and change it quickly.

Wow, unless you have some magic part number that isn't in any listing they make, then your compleatly in the wrong. HP DOES NOT make an extended life battery for the DV7 / HDX18. Not much is known about the DV8 yet as far as the battery and if there will be an extended and if it will fit in the same slot as our laptops.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. That's a lot of money for a battery.
Really? I was positive the did? Anyway, there is one sold on Amazon, but I'm not sure about it's quality.

Probably because they realize the people buying those for super battery life.

The HDX18 is heavy enough with the 8-cell, if they have to double it it would be close-to-if-not-over 10 pounds; but I've carried bookbags heavier though grade school.

Wow, i had never seen that before. I may have to consider getting the one from amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/HDX18T-1000-H...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1254450761&sr=8-1) since right now i'm rocking the 2 battery setup described above. On top of that, a raised battery does help with the heating issue as it helps provide the ventilation needed.

There are more than a few threads on this, I spent U$50- or so for my 10 amp+ no-name 12 cell.

Extended battery threads yes, but none of which is relevant to the HDX 18. In fact, I've been searching for that particular extended battery for a few weeks now.

"In for a penny, in for a pound, I guess. I just hate to not being able to go more than 10 feet of a power outlet.

Anyway, when you're doing work, two hours burn by fast. And the worst part is you're not typing the whole time. Besides, the little people with their plebeian laptops just love getting smug watching me run to find a power outlet.

The 8 cell battery on mines reads 14.4 volts, 73Wh. I read somewhere on my computer about 6.5 amps, but I don't remember where I saw that at.

some, but not all, of those generic hdx18 12 cell batts are rated at 7200 mah (7.2 amps). Be careful which battery you get. Some of the sellers give 90 days warranty, some a full year.

    Read the fine print.

That's not a lot of time for something you can easily spend well over $100 for.

I noticed that when I was researching batteries. That's when I realized you can't just go willy-nilly picking the first battery you see just because it say extended or 12 cell. Sometimes sellers don't even publish any information, which makes me even more suspicious.

A years battery warranty is standard, even generous. It's what I have with my no-name battery. And I found it by spending about 15 minutes reading the auctions on ebay.

It's time for you to make your decision. No one here is going to tell you to go and spend $75 on a battery. I bought my 10 amp + battery (different battery, different laptop) six months ago and am happy.

    YMMV, etc, etc.

Well you're probably a lot more fluid on ebay than I. I only made my first purchase a week ago.

Actually, they're between $90 and $120! Thing is, they only list compatability for the HDX 16. Since they're both essentially the same machine, I'm wondering are they interchangeable?
Are you implying I should just take a shot in the dark and hope for the best?

Never order a battery from China from an eBay seller. If it doesn't work and you have to ship it back, they sometimes say it never gets back to them. It happened to me twice before.

**everything** on ebay is a shot in the dark. everything.

you can sometimes reduce the risk by buying from someone with thousands of positive rating points, someone with a US shipping/billing address, etc, etc. but the risk is always there.

In my case, buying a 10 amp battery for less then 1/3 of what HP wanted was worth the risk.

    as I said, YMMV.

Good advice, thanks! And besides, shipping back and forth across the planet gets very expensive. . .

The HDX16 battery is only compatable with the DV5 (and i think the DV6). It will not fit in an HDX18. the battery for the HDX18 is compatable with the DV7 (and possibly the DV8 when it is released).
