Just about to order my dv5t and I'm wondering if the Infinity display is worth the money. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

quoted from the dv5t notebookreview.com review:

"The Infinity display is basically a large piece of clear plastic over the entire display. It makes the display look like it has no borders. I have the Infinity finish on my notebook. While it makes the notebook look sleeker and more modern, it does increase the amount of reflections over a standard glossy finish. I personally do not mind the reflections. If you are used to a regular glossy display, the Infinity display is not that different in glossiness. I would choose the Infinity display again, since it makes the notebook look sleeker."

I personally think it makes the screen like much nicer.

im was in your shoes as well, and though i dont own one, its currently a must on my workorder. for the small amount of money you pay extra for it over a basic WSXGA+ screen....why not? seems the classier approach and likely to be better for resale in the future

There are some pros and cons for the Infinity display. The only thing that annoys people is the slight glare that the Infinity gives. On the other hand, it creates a frameless look and prevents dust from getting trapped within the grooves of the LCD bezel.

I didn't mind the extra reflections, however, I thought that the Infinity verson on the HP's cheapened the overall look of the LCD Panel/display,so I went with the standard panel. I would suggest you go to a store that has both versions and decide for yourself before placing order.

Agreed. I was going to order it, but when I saw it in person I realized that one of the reasons I've moved to LCD's was to get away from the glare of CRT's. Why should I pay extra to go backwards, regardless of the coolness factor?

Definitely check it out in person if you can. It looks great sitting there, but between the horrible glare and the odd focus problems that the plastic (?) layer creates, I'm glad I stuck with the standard display. It does give a cleaner look, I'll give it that.

    Of course, YMMV.

I agree with the advice to go look at it in a store to compare if possible. This option seems to fall into the Love It or Hate It category.

I decided on the Infinity Display and I'm very happy with my choice so far. My dv7t arrived only this morning but I worked for several hours today under industrial lighting at work and then a few more at my kitchen table with an open window's light flooding in behind me. Neither environment resulted in bad glare. My frame of reference is my old Inspiron 9300's display.

One thing to keep in mind - this is purely a fashion/aesthetics choice. There is no difference in visual quality. If you are on a tight budget and debating between a functional upgrade and the Infinity display, I'd go with a functional upgrade.

man, this is what i was thinking... i ordered mine with the glossy screen... i hope the glare is not as terrible as it sounds... otherwise i made a huge mistake =(

HP does give you 21 days to return a unit, so if it is as bad as it seems, and as you described, im going to bank on this and return it.

this is a desktop replacement for me so the screen has to be comfortable as hell on my eyes since i'll be staring at it for hours on end............

im going to try to go to bestbuy or something tomorrow to see it for myself.....

    im keeping my fingers crossed... :( :( :( :( :( :(

so i went to best buy on saturday and saw both 17" screens, one with the inifinity display and one without...

no joke, the glare on the infinity screen hurt my eyes so much. i spent about 10 minutes on each unit, looking at pictures, reading random text, and after 10 minutes on the infinity, my eyes were killing me! i head a headache after i left....

but then again, this is under bestbuy's lighting. im going to wait until my unit arrives and use it for a while before i decide what to do. but i really did not like the extra glossy effect. and honestly, the pictures on the laptops seemed the same. i didnt notice any enhancement or better quality of the infinity display. it simply makes the screen look bezzle-less and that's about it.

i did really like the non-infinity display. although there was glare, it was definitely not as bad as the inifinity display. the glare really sucks because if you have a black background, it'll reflect anything in front of it - your hands typing /the graphics on my tshirt, etc.

i'll see how my eyes fare when i get my unit in.
