Does anyone out there have any experience on the HP DV1000? I have noticed that Consumers Report has it listed as a "Quick Pick" best buy. However, CR was testing the model using the 1.5 Ghz Celron M processor. I'm thinking of getting this for my daughter for college, but I would like some opinions of owners on this or the Compaq or any other brand compatable model.

    Thanks to All who respond,
    Tom

I would get the comparable Compaq V2000, it's a little more sturdy. So long as gaming isn't a requirment, that's a great machine for the money.

Both are great machines, but I found the keyboard and touchpad of the DV1000 to be better. The V2000's keyboard is a bit too flimsy for me. But both are very good machines. I'd try to get on with Pentium M/Centrino technology, you'll get better performance and battery life.
    Both are excellent college laptops.

If you buy the DV1000 in stores, you get a cool little remote that can turn it on and off, control Powerpoint presentations, and DVD movies of course.

I still debate dv1000 vs. dv4000 - either one is YES.
Centrino makes a lot of sense.

One consideration is back-to-school sales in mid- (early?) August.
Software bundles, e.g. XP Pro (for campus networking) and
MS Office as well as hardware rebates etc. make this arguably
    the customer-friendliest time of yr.

And yes - dv1000: quality, speed (except video with hotshot 3-d
games) and size! 1200x768 is a fine-grain screen.

    I'd seriously consider customizing at
    hpshopping.com
    to get:
    1 stick of 512 ram
60 gb, 5400 rpm disk (25% faster, size is min. for 5400)
    slowest cpu (for battery life)
    larger (12-cell) battery

Their discounts mosty are concurrent w/ office depot & others.

dv4000 : has larger screen, same battery life in tests, same
resolution 1200 x (in 15.4": 800), faster video, and faster bus
(533 vs. 400) in the faster cpus.
dv1000 is about a year old, I think,
dv4000 is about 2 months old, Sonoma chipset.

Sales can also be expected in 1st, 2nd week of July and maybe
    last week-of-June (end of Q2).
But - beware, you can always wait for the coming attraction
and lose opp'ty to use it today.

hpshopping.com gives mostly accurate estimated ship date
    during online conf'gtn.

Wait a few weeks (June 22nd?) and get the L2000 Special Edition. Similar case to the dv1000 but with an AMD Turion 64 CPU, ATI video, Broadcom wireless, and since there's no Intel marketing tax it costs less. It looks better too. Nice improvements all around.

Great computer, very fast, excellent features, love the remote. BUT... Horrible screen for watching movies and gets extremely hot underneath.

I've seen about six display models at various stores and only one I saw at CompUSA had a "grainy" appearance.

Just curious, are you basing the screen issue on just the model you have or other dv1k's you've seen elsewhere?

Based on the model I have. I was hoping that the one I got was reject or a screw up, but I went to the local Best Buy and CompUSA and saw for myself, that they're all like that. I called Tigerdirect and they say that I cant return it- they dont accept "HP returns" even though it wasnt revealed to me when i bought, it wasnt said on the reciept where the return policy was stated. But oh well, I've got one if anyone wants to buy it. ;) I may just give it to my girlfriend.

Try selling it at local shops, you'll be surprised how much a fairly new decent condition notebook will go for at small stores (at least in my area)...Also, CompUSA , Toshiba, & Hp Direct accept trade-ins.

I wouldn't think the DV4000 would get the same battery life as the DV1000. Both use the same battery, and the DV4000 would drain the battery faster due to its larger screen.

Hello, I'm considering this laptop as well, but have some reticence due to upgradability. The model I'm considering is of the Celeron M variety, but I'd like to upgrade it to a Pentium M some time down the road; is this at all possible?

The model is DV1010ca, I believe. Please, to those who are knowledgable and/or know their tech like the back of their hands, advise on whether a CPU upgrade is possible.

    Thanks

P.S a little aside, I'm feeling apprehensive about it now that I think about it. I'm beginning to see more and more of these DV1xxx models in the FS forums, is this caveat emptor or what? Seems to me like a laptop this great should not be unloaded so frequently. I really like the overal package, but perplexed why owners are so haste to unload, and in most cases, at a big lost to themselves.

They have info on CPU upgradibility of this computer at its forums at www.dv1000forums.com, look there.
