So I bought the Envy 14 at the start of the year, before the Radiance displays came back into stock.

When I heard about the Radiance displays coming back and the $500 coupon, I couldnt help but be bummed out. Anyways long story short, im looking to make some improvements to a great laptop to just make me feel more comfortable with it.

    So basically my question is:
    What improvements do you recommend?
What are the cheapest price out there?

My setup is the i5 580m with 6 GB Ram and a 7200 RPM 500 GB Hard Drive, with the Brightview display.

So far ive heard getting an SSD is a good idea and getting the slice helps out as well. So any suggestions are much appreciated.

Also, does anyone else have an issue where if you press Shift while typing a word, the first two letters will be capitalized? Something to do with the Shift key sticking for a bit longer than usual?

SSD is an absolute performance booster.
I bought a Samsung 470 Series 256GB SSD and love it. Others really like the Crucial RealSSD C300.

Other than that; I also purchased a Radiance display from HP parts store and installed it on my non-radiance envy.

Not much you can do. I have 8GB RAM, but not sure the extra 2GB is needed by you (I run VM's for development).

Whiteonline, when did you purchase your Radiance display from the parts store? I just put an order in and called CSR there who assured me that I'll get the part. Do you know what the warranty from the parts store is? Was it easy as everyone's saying to hook up the new screen?

    Thanks

An SSD drive is your best bet and definitely on my to do list once I can afford to buy one.

SSD is on my list for next year or whenever the ratio $/Gb becomes interesting.

Definitely SSD. I had an Envy 14 with the 640GB 7200rpm drive for about a week and now have an Envy 14 with the 256GB HP OEM version of the Crucial C300 and the difference in real world performance is significant and immediately apparent.

How long did it take to get your ssd up and running. How long would it take to transfer everything on my computer to an ssd (not a clean install)?

I did a clean install because I find it works better than uninstalling bloatware, but it did take a pretty long time. Probably 6+ hours including dealing with some driver install issues, but of that only a couple hours was actual active time. The rest of the time was passive wait time during which I worked as usual on my desktop computer.

How long it will take to transfer things from your old drive will depend on size, organization and nature of the data as well as connection method so there's no way to predict how long it will take. It took me about an hour but I have a large % of my data in Dropbox which makes things much easier and more automated.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Im thinking of getting the Crucial 256 GB SSD and making the other HDD as an external one.

Just got to find a good guide somewhere...
