Hi, I installed some RAM for a friend, and then realized I hadn't taken out the battery first.

I started the computer, and after XP loaded, I went into System Information. It said there was 768MB physical memory, which made enough sense, since I installed an extra 512, and there was 256 already in there.

The computer seemed slow to me, but this could be attributed to poor maintenance over the course of the three years my friend has owned it.

How likely is it that I've done irreparable harm to the memory? Would the computer just run slower if I did?

Little to none. I'm sure I've done it dozens of times without anything happening.

Ive actually accidentally removed and replaced the RAM while the computer was on and in sleep mode. I don't recommend this procedure, but nothing was harmed nonetheless.

Maybe the CPU is wondering why theres (1) 256k ram and (1)512k ram...

Try running a dual 512k rams. Not sure it would hlep though.

It would be a good idea to run memtest after the new RAM has been installed. Take a look at the guide in my sig.

No, this would not slow down the system even slightly 1 bit. The CPU does not care if the memory modules are mismatched.
