THe original drive, a Hitachi DK23BA-10 was ATA-5 format (IDE) and all newegg has are ATA-6 drives. Is this basically the same format, and will an ata-6 work in this laptop?

All new ATA standrad drives should be backwards compatible with older ATA standards. So, ATA-6 should be compatible with ATA-5,4,3 etc.

Do not get SATA drives since they are basde on a different standard.
