Is it difficult to install additonal RAM in the 6500? I have two GB and would like four. I'm technically challenged and though I've installed RAM in a PC, I've never done so for a a notebook.

For those familiar with this notebook, will I have to completely replace the current RAM modules with 4 GB, or can I just add two more GB?

    Thank you.

Yes, it only takes 2 screws to remove the RAM cover. Just as easy changing desktop RAM.

You can just add in 2gb for now so you have 3gb. You cannot use all 4gb on 32bit OS anyway

Thanks for the info. Hmmm, I wonder why it was advertised that it takes up to 4gb of RAM. I didn't know it would be okay to have 3gb. I thought you had to have equal amounts in each slot.

Where's a good place to buy RAM?

    Thanks again.

No they do not need to be equal. Though if the RAM amount is equal the memory will run on dual channel mode which will give an extra 3% more performance. Its not a big deal.

Theres cheap ram deals at www.newegg.com

I went to buy more ram today to have a total of 3 mb. But I was told I'd hardly see a difference between 2 and 3 mb, so why should I add another MB of RAM...throw away 1, add 2...just doesn't make sense?

I kind of feel cheated. When I bought the laptop the specs said that it could be upgraded to 4mb of RAM. What's going on? Another newbie getting suckered?

    Thanks.

It can be upgraded to 4mb of RAM. Any 32 bit OS will only SEE and USE 3mb though, but a 64 bit OS will SEE and USE all 4mb. If you have access to a Vista Anytime Upgrade disk (64 bit version) or ANY Vista 64 bit OS disk version and you use the Vista key that is on the bottom of your laptop you can install the 64 bit version for free and it is legal.

Other than installing more RAM, are there advantages to upgrading to the 64 bit version?

Also, what the salesperson correct that adding one more MB of RAM would not improve overall performance?

RAM will definately add more peformance.. 2 to 3gb should be noticable. I sure noticed the increased responsiveness in Vista.

For XP 2 to 3gb is pointless because XP runs perfectly at 2gb already.

I think that's somewhat of a blanket statement. For some, 2gb might be "perfect"; others might be satisfied with 512 (imagine a well-optimized XP with just one program that you need), while others need 4 to run some large programs. What's good for you isn't necessarily the best for everyone.
