I put the recovery discs onto a USB memory what if I want to install a SSD?
Will Windows 7 sense that its a SSD and make the correct settings even though im using the recovery USB-stick or do I need a proper fresh install from a DVD?
If I need a DVD, can this be ordered from HP or do I actually have to buy a new license?
-
I believe it should be fine if you run the Windows Experience Index.
Easy way to check is to open Disk Defragmenter and click 'Configure schedule' -> 'Select disks'.
The drive letter of the SSD should not appear in the list. -
you do not need to buy dvd from hp or buy a new license for a new install.
download windows 7 from this thread and you have your windows 7 serial at the bottom:

I think you should do a clean install. -
oh and btw clean install of windows 7 on ssd didnt change any settings.
had to enable trim myself and turn off defragmentation. -
Not sure what you did wrong. By default, Windows 7 will detect SSD on install and automatically disable defrag for the volume and trim is also automatically supported.
It did for me when I upgraded to my Samsung 470 Series 256GB.
Edit: Upon reading, I noticed that some SSD's don't report their disk type properly to the OS. In those cases, you would need to manually configure for SSD. -
Hey all, I just purchased an SSD and I'm looking for a simple solution into making it my main drive. I've already installed the hardware and moved my old HDD to the optical bay's spot.
On my HDD I have the HP Recovery Partition (which I believe is the same as the recovery discs). My question is can I run the recovery (pressing F11 at boot) and have it install to the SSD, leaving my old drive as is? I booted into the menu and when I select recovery it warns me that it's about to wipe all data. At that point I get a little worried because it hasn't asked me which drive I want to wipe and install to.
Any help would be appreciated. Also I noticed that Windows 7 doesn't show my SSD (intel 510 120gb) in My Computer. I can see it under Disk Management, does the drive just need to be formatted? -
Thanks for all the answers, will give it try when I bought a SSD.
My Envy came with one but I put that into my main computer instead but after using that for a while the need for a SSD in my laptop kind of grew onto me.
Pongalong:
You could try doing the recovery, I tested this myself but I never ran any benchmarks so not sure its working properly. To get the recovery working I had to downsize the partition on the mechanical disk before so that it would fit onto the SSD.
I would do a fresh install but each to their own. -
Did you do a recovery from dvd's or from the original hard drive recovery partition connected through usb?
Installing SSD in E14, what about Windows 7?
