I almost lost my head trying to work this out, so I figured I might as well share the steps for anybody else who's having trouble.

These are instructions to install Windows Professional XP SP3 for the dv6607nr. It includes extra steps to get the audio device to work. I cannot guarantee that this will work for any other system.

    Pavillion dv6607nr
    • AMD Turion 64 Mobile TK-53 (Athlon Technology)
    • nVidia nForce 560 Board
    • Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN
    • Ricoh SD/MMC Host Controller
    • NVIDIA GeForce 7150M Video Adapter
    • Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad
    • HP Quick Launch Buttons
    • Conexant High Definition Audio & Modem

Here are a list of other links that got me to this point:
HP DV6500T Review - Installing Windows XP
XP Up & Running (99.9%) on my new dv6600 (AMD / nVidia based)
Installing Windows XP on the dvx500t Series
no audio -- PCI Device -- Fixed

Its kind of ironic that the answer to get the last device working was on an Asus Eee forum!

The steps are mostly an amalgam of TheDave's instructions and mujjuman's thread, I would like to thank them both for their efforts!

Here's a list of tools that were helpful:
    CPU-Z
    Everest Home Edition v2.20
    nLite 1.3.5
    IZarc v3.81

Here's a list of the drivers I used:
    1. nVidia Chipset for nForce 560

    2. Broadcom Wireless Base Driver

    3. Broadcom WLan Utility (this might actually not be necessary, but not sure)

    4. Ricoh 5 in 1

    5. nForceWare X 156.72

    6. You can either download the full Hackez Driver Pack 1.02
or you could try these links for the individual files that you will need, kb888111.rar, SynapticsXp v10.0.13.2 , sp34796 - HP Quick Launch Buttons

    7. sp34200 - Conexant High Definition Audio Driver
(should work with sp35682 as well which is a later version, but not the one I used)

    8. sp35335 - Conexant HDA Modem Driver

The first thing you will want to do is backup all your files, which was a pain for me and also the reason I downgraded to begin with. Windows Explorer on Vista would hang when transfering files larger than 100MB to my external!

Don't forget to backup your SwSetup folder, which has all your Vista drivers, and it would be easiest to download all the drivers you will need before hand and have them ready on a disc or something.

Next get a hold of Windows XP, and for this particular install I had inadvertently slipstreamed SP3. Had I known the trouble it would have been I wouldn't have bothered. But now that I figured it out it should be easier for anyone else.

Use nLite to make your boot disk, this is explained better on nogodforme.com and on mujjuman's thread.

After you have installed XP you can start with the drivers, the **fun** part.

If all goes well you will have a fully functioning version of XP SP3 with the quick launch buttons! (a little disclaimer, the buttons include everything except the dvd button and the quickplay application launcher, but all I really wanted was the mute and volume buttons. I would imagine that it would be possible to get the QuickPlay application to work, but it might require you to partition a section of your hard drive which I have seen vague instructions on.)

    STEP 1 - nVidia Chipset
    nVidia Chipset for nForce 560

You will have to make some edits to your .inf files using notepad, but they are no harder than opening a text document, adding a few lines, and saving it.

Run the file and it will install the drivers on your root directory by default. You will want to go to:
    C:\NVIDIA\nForceWinXP\

Here you will edit 3 files:
    SMBus\nvsmbus.inf
    Ethernet\nvnetbus.inf
    Ethernet\nvenetfd.inf

    nvsmbus.inf edit:
Under the section [NVIDIA_SYS] add the line:

    Code:
    %PCI\VEN_10de&DEV_01b4.DeviceDesc% = AMD_NO_DRV, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0542
Really all you are doing is copying the last line and changing the DEV_ number from 0446 to 0542

    Save the .inf file.

    nvnetbus.inf edit:
Under section [STANDARD] add the line:

    Code:
    %nvnetbus.DeviceDesc%=nvnetBus_Device, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_054C

    nvenetfd.inf edit:
    Under section [ControlFlags] add:

    Code:
    ExcludeFromSelect = {1a3e09be-1e45-494b-9174-d7385b45bbf5}\NVNET_DEV054C
    Under section [Nvidia] add:

    Code:
    %NVENET.DeviceDesc% = NVENET_2K65.NDI, {1a3e09be-1e45-494b-9174-d7385b45bbf5}\NVNET_DEV054C
    Under section [Nvidia.NTx86.5.1] add:

    Code:
    %NVENET.DeviceDesc% = NVENET_XP65.NDI, {1a3e09be-1e45-494b-9174-d7385b45bbf5}\NVNET_DEV054C
    ------------------------

Now go to your Device Manager and update the SM Bus Controller
What you want to do is make the update dialog point to the 'SMBus\' folder where it will sniff out the device changes you made to the .inf files.

Do the same for the Ethernet Controller and you should be done with this step.

NOTE: If you get warnings that the driver is unsigned by Windows just continue. Also, sometimes during or after each driver Windows will find new hardware. If those bring up a found new hardware wizard just cancel out of that dialog.

    Step 2 - Wireless 802.11b/g
    Broadcom Wireless Base Driver
Broadcom WLan Utility -this one might not be necessary, but not sure

    Step 3 - 5 in 1 Card Reader
    Ricoh 5 in 1

    STEP 4 - Video Device
    nForceWare X 156.72
After installing, nVidia should install an icon in your system tray. Run the control panel and it should fix the resolution making everything look ~nice.

STEP 5 - Touchpad & Quick Launch Buttons

    SynapticsXp v10.0.13.2
sp34796 - HP Quick Launch Buttons
note: So far you've been following TheDave's instructions pretty closely. At this point I'm giving you mujjuman's advice, but I'm not too sure how crucial the DO NOT REBOOT or the DO NOT TOUCH part is. All I can tell you is I followed it, and it worked.

Install the Synaptics Driver but DO NOT REBOOT. Install the Quick Launch Driver and DO NOT TOUCH the QuickPlay buttons on your keyboard.

STEP 6 - High Definition Audio & Modem Drivers
    kb888111.rar
sp34200 - Conexant High Definition Audio Driver or sp35682
sp35335 - Conexant HDA Modem Driver
At this point all the unknown devices should be removed from your device manager, all except one last unknown PCI Device. This is the part that almost made me pop a vessel trying to figure out.

NOTE: This only applies to an SP3 install of XP. Other methods may be easier if you are running SP2.

First you need to install a copy of Microsoft's Universal Architecture Audio Driver (UAA). Do not use the HP SoftPaq version, you need to use the Knowledge Base version which is linked. It can also be found in versions of Realtek's High Definition Audio Drivers, which is included in Hackez's Driver Pack but if you get the kb888111.exe file you'll save yourself from having to download a couple hundred MB's.

Now you won't be able to run kb888111.exe, it is meant to be an update for SP2 so when it detects SP3 it craps out. Fortunately I think the file is just a self-executing archive, so you can open it with a compression software (I used Izarc which is free, or WinRar is good but offers only a trial version) and extract the contents to a folder

Next go to your ?PCI Device in the Device Manager and update the driver. Manually point to the 'commonfiles' folder in the kb888111 directory and all sorts of wonderful installation bars should start flashing all over the place along with new hardware detected balloons popping up like daises. The PCI Device will be gone in a flash and will be replaced by two separate Unknown Devices.

Install sp34200 - Conexant High Definition Audio Driver.
    At8VEN5a.inf edit:
Under section [Conexant] add the line:

    Code:
    %HdAudioFunctionDriver.5045.DeviceDesc% = HdAudModel,HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5045&SUBSYS_103C30CF
    ------------------------

Now update your first unknown device and manually point it to the sp34200 folder and you will hear the grating system beeps transformed into a lovely baritone note.

Install sp35335 - Conexant HDA Modem Driver.
    WinXP\SprtHD5m.inf edit:
Under section [ControlFlags] add the line:
    Code:
    ExcludeFromSelect=  HDAUDIO\FUNC_02&VEN_14F1&DEV_5045&SUBSYS_103C30CF
And in the [HSF_MODEM] section add:

    Code:
    %HSFModem% = ModemX, HDAUDIO\FUNC_02&VEN_14F1&DEV_5045&SUBSYS_103C30CF
    ------------------------

Update and point the last unknown device to the \WinXP folder and Done! Your Device Manager should now have a clean bill of health!

Epilogue, if you want you can optimize your processor which is mentioned in other instructions, but since I don't know if its necessary or not I'll leave it to you to decide. TheDave linked to the AMD Website where you can download the Athalon Dual Core Drivers, or if you download Hackez Driver Pack 1.02 there are AMD drivers, optimizers, and hotfixes.

Enjoy your new Windows XP SP3!

Found this guide on the top of Google results, and it literally brightened my day. Thank you so much for making this guide, it worked flawlessly on my Pavillion dv6607nr.

The only dead link I found was kb888111.rar, which I found here:
    files.filefront.com/kb888111rar/;11689841;/fileinfo.html
