    Hello!

I just bought a dv8 1090ev, it is less than a month old and it has been giving me an annoying problem lately.

When i play games where the ac adapter is not plugged in it shuts down after around 10 minutes, it completely goes dead(like i`m holding the power button down for 4 sec). I play games like supreme commander 2, heroes of newerth and heroes of might and magic 5.
It does it in all 3 games, there is absolutely no problem if i am just surfing or playing movies.

(((It ONLY does it if the ac adapter is not plugged in, i can play for hours and hours if i am plugged in no problems.)))

Running out of battery power has never been the case. If the battery is at 100% it still does it still goes off after around 10 min depending on the game. When i turn it on again after 1 min, there is still lots of battery power.

The problem which i stated was that it shuts down if the ac adapter is not plugged in, when gaming.

None of the settings in the power plans are set so it would turn off anything, in any kind of way..

I already did the battery check, it shows that it is in perfect health.

    Anyone else experiencing this problem?

If anyone with the dv8 could do a simple test where they unplug the ac adapter and run prime95 for around 10-15 min.
This is where my laptop also fails, like it does in gaming.. Anything that uses a lot of power is where it goes off only when the ac adapter is not plugged in.

    I´m confused

I would be grateful for any help

    Thanks in advance

    Sounds like a motherboard issue.

Since there's nothing wrong with your battery as you described in the DV8 Owner's thread and that you can play these games on A/C, the only viable conclusion is that there is something wrong with your motherboard.

On battery while playing games, powermizer will reduce the clocks of the Nvidia GPU. Games will appear sluggish. But your computer won't shut down until the battery is depleted. That your computer does predictably is indicative of a hardware issue.

You should consider getting the motherboard changed.

I just checked it out. The wear level is 7%, where the charge level is 100%.

    What does it mean?

    Much appreciated

it means that your battery is 93% good and fully charged, so it won't be the battery

    Hmmm...

Then is it really the motherboard? i mean everything runs smooth on ac adapter..

If you did a factory restore of the OS and it still happens, then yes most likely, mobo.

Have you checked your temperatures? My experience is mostly with older models, but a lot of the older models wouldn't run the fan as fast or as long on battery power, which could mean that the games are overheating your computer.

Can you find a battery like at bestbuy or somewhere so you can test it out? That would narrow it down for you. If you are going to get HP to replace parts, have them send both the mobo and battery. Save you the hassle if it turns out to be the other.

I have not touched the OS or anything else for that matter, it is exactly the way i got it. I did not reinstall OS, i just kept it like it was right out of the box.

Should i try a fresh install? Maybe it would do the job?

Temperatures are around 85 when using prime95, i use core temp.

I assume that's while plugged in? What does it say when you try it on battery? Another thing is that you might want to try another program that will also check your GPU temperatures as well.

Are those games demanding/power hungry? I have the same experience with my laptop (probably a huge step-down weaker than yours, specs in siggy), where it shuts down after 5-10min of playing Dragon Age: Origins (all settings on low) on battery despite it being fully charged. Immediately rebooting shows my battery is far from being drained. I never had problems playing Dragon Age when plugged in.

I remember reading a post from the gaming section of NBR (which unfortunately, I couldn't locate) that it may be caused by the battery not being able to supply enough power (not sure if "power" is the right term) to run the game. I don't remember the exact words of the person who posted it, but he mentioned something like how it could "short-circuit" something (i.e. demanding power more than the laptop/battery can provide).

My laptop (not the same model) will suddenly switch off if total power usage goes over ~60W.
For instance, if I run Prime95 and Furmark at the same time, and then I can't turn it back on until I plug in the AC adaptor.

Then maybe all laptops instantly shuts down, if there is simply too much power usage for the battery to handle?

I would try a new power adapter. From my experience, HP is notorious for power adapter failures. I've gone through 5-6 so far with my 4-year-old HP Compaq nw8440.
