On the models that offer both integrated and discrete graphics: if you choose a discrete model, does the integrated video still exist on the motherboard?
Behind the veil: if the discrete video card fails, is there a way to activate the integrated video as a backup?

Answer to both of your questions: No.

They only include only one. You have to realize, that many times even though the card might have dedicated memory, it can still be integrated on to the motherboard. Many manufacturers do this in order to better control the temperatues and decrease the thickness of the laptop.
They can use different motherboards for the dedicated and integrated versions. -
1. Many chipsets have integrated graphics and also support dicrete ones, so if you are using a discrete one, the integrated one is still in the chipset, but it's disabled.
2. Not sure, but I think that depends on the motherboard and BIOS. -
I don't think you'll find many laptops with a 915GM/945GM (integrated graphics) and another GPU.
There is a Sony laptop that has the 945GM and a GeForce Go; the user can switch between the two.
(of course I am ignoring AMD laptops because AMD laptops are Dead To Me.)
