I recently purchased a zv5000t notebook on hpshopping.com and I'm attempting to connect to the internet via my Motorola SB5100 Broadband modem. My ISP is Comcast, and I'm using the provided Ethernet cable to connect to my notebook's RJ-45 network jack.

Now, I've run the New Connection wizard dozens of times, connected to the modem via USB, ran the software provided with the modem (which I never had to do with my desktop), and I still can't get a connection.

Please help, I'm new to everything computers!

hey, many broadband providers lock the connection to a particular mac address. You may have to call them up and tell them you got a new computer and need to connect it. or if you still want to use your old one online at the same time, pick up a 802.11g router, assuming you got wireless and if not just a plain 4 port router, and set that up to clone the mac address of your new computer and then connect both computers up at the same time.

i'm POSITIVE that comcast only does mac-address locking for the intial install.. it's open after that... at least west-coast that's the way it works..

i LITERALLY had to reinstall windows on my g/f's desktop when comcast came.... worst broadband install evar!

OK, I have my router. How do I go about cloning the MAC address?

A router is great to have for the firewall and connection sharing. My advice would be to just call your ISP before you spend more time working on it in cause like it was suggested they have locked you to your old mac address. It could just be a matter of them unlocking it and thats all. It could just be a 5minute call, but know tech support of most company's it will be longer [xx(]
