While fooling around with my HP ze4230 laptop Trying to reboot it with a new harddrive it went black on me with no warning.I put the old harddrive back in.Its still dark but I can see in the screen very faintly with a flashlight.I hooked it up to my desktop monitor and it worked well.My problem is,I took the inverter out but how can I tell if its bad or if its the backlight that is bad..Im laidoff and broke at the moment. Can anyone help?

    Thanks,
    Keefgras

Did you see any red or orange tinting on the screen prior to the backlight not working anymore, especially when you first turned it on?
If you let the laptop sit for a while and cool down (not too cool, just ambient temperatures) do you get a few seconds out of it again?

Odds are it's the inverter. Backlights usually turn pinkish when they're failing, though I did have one Dell notebook where one of the wires connected to the backlight broke off. You can usually find inverters for cheap on eBay.

No I get nothing,it never came back on even for a second.I dont remember seeing any pinkish light..I tried reseating the memory, holding the power switch down for 30 seconds with all power off..nothing.Can I test the inverter with a voltmeter?

    Then it's probably the inverter.
Can't test because they only give the output when plugged into a lamp.
