My dv2700t gets hot really easily. After around 1 hour of use on my lap, it gets so hot that it hurts. Is this normal for all HP 14" or is it just me? If it is common in all HP notebooks, should I get a cooling pad?

You should try undervolting the CPU. Have a look at the cooling guide.

What used to be my dv6000z 15.4 was always painfully hot, especially from the ram compartment. The ram always ran really hot, but at least your notebook isn't like a flaming piece of metal like my sister's 15.4" MBP :D

Well, my aging dv5000t would get painfully hot on the graphics card compartment. (Left side only, right side was really cool!)
And, my super aging Presario B3800 would get painfully hot on the ram slot. (Middle side, other sides would for some unknown reason stay super cool)
STILL, yeah Jstn7477 ^^, these two laptops in matters of heat, literally beats my underclocked MacBook Pro 15"4, which feels like it would explode and burn right on my lap.

Were you doing some really intensive work on your laptop? Mine gets a little warm with basic word processing and internet, mostly under the left palm rest.
Gaming, however, is a different matter altogether.
