I can't find any Compaq brand desktop on HP website now, and I just noticed they took off the 14inch Compaq notebooks. Are they phasing out the Compaq brand?

The compaq branding is pretty strong in the business sector...though it is called HP-Compaq there :)

3 models, that's all they have now. HP used to have much more models of Compaq products, notebook and desktop.

That's true. The new HP 510 is not labeled as HP Compaq notebook though.

    .

It might be a case of a new /old models being phased in or out.

Another thing to consider... I'd rather have (3) good models to chose from, than 18 so-so ones...

I wish mfg's would cut down on the number of models, (which would mean parts would be interchangable more so, which btw means lower cost!!!!) than making models that really are pretty much the same, but have a differant case /trim/, or the buttons in a differant place...

It looks like they're aiming to reposition Compaq as a true "budget" line, which makes a lot of sense. They've always tended to have fewer high-end options on the Compaq models, but the overlap was huge. Having a truly separate line for the budget end makes a lot more sense, and would add value to the name fo the "HP"-branded models.

How would they manage to do that? Compaq as a company technically does not exist anymore.

Only the brand name exists, which HP owns the rights to.

Outside the US, Compaq is still a very reputable brand since they were much bigger than HP in certain countries at the time of merger, although this is probably no longer relevant.

    No, it's not.

Compaq was pretty much absorbed into HP's different groups.

    Personal systems, business, servers, etc.
