i own a dv7-3079wm (for gaming, i know using a laptop for gaming is not really a good idea since i use it like a desktop but i got it from a friend for 100$ so i cant complain) and i havent had any issues with it execpt today i got my first overheat message and im kinda worried it say my core temp got to 900 F and thats a bit worry. i looked it up and thats about 484C which is really high but it didnt feel that hot.
it idles at 70-75C (i keep it in high proformance mode all the time)
but let me explain some more
    i was playing F.E.A.R 2 at med-max settings
nothing in backround cept a few windows explorer tabs, skype, and msn
i started playing fear 2 again and about the same ammount of time in its only running at 90-100C which is no where near the shutdown temp of 484C
(FYI my freind had spllied bleach on the laptop everything works fine execpt the screens a little messed IE white lines and flickering but i use a HP 15' screen for that mabye thats giving false errors or messing with fan speeds)
ive looked it up and Yes i know thats still pretty hot from what ive read but considering its the best computer ive got will it be allright.
im just a little worried is all it shutdown for a few secs and wouldnt turn back on BUT im chucking that up to my fualty freeagent desk ext hdd.
i dont really have much money at all it will take me awhile to save just for a colling stand so for now im useing a few game pamplets to keep the back end about 3 inches off my desks surface.
i do run rainmeter which can be cpu heavy but i just use a text clock for it
my hard drives pretty full (about 30% left) im not overclocking but like i said its in constant high proformance mode at all times.
im thinking mabye it overheated cause ide left it on for like 3 days in a row with F.E.A.R 1 running in fullscreen max settings so mabye thats why it overheated because useing it for gameing like a normally do ive never had this issue like i can run starcraft 2 at medium setting and play for 12+ hours(no life) with no issue, my laptop does feel hot when i play it tho(it burns my legs if i try to rest it on my lap) but from what ive heard gameing laptops can generally run hot (another fyu im guessing its reached 100 C but the highest ive seen in speedfan is 91C after alt+tabing out in the middle of a big gunfight in fear 2 and it was at 91C).
so much ranting but bear with me im worried all i ahev to fall back on is a HP3220n (slim line) w/ vista
all im really asking is Is This Normal (for high quality gaming)
and for the fact i use it like a desktop and should i have anything to worry about if i keep an eye on it cause im haveing my stuff fail all around me
(IE my keyboard my 1.5tb ext hdd my screen wire)
please get back to me on this as soon as possible
also Sorry for the ranting/run on sentences/no punctiuation/spelling errors
im just typeing this fast and also im kinda lazy but Please help

Ahh hp dv series. I like those laptops, theres always a ton of ports to play with on them. Its more of a multimedia laptop then anything. Reduce your gaming sessions to when you can keep your temps in the 80's ala near a cool window, or during nighttime when the room temp isnt scorching. Really though it shouldnt make a difference either way, as laptops are ment to handle high temps but closing in on 100 when playing a game is not the greatest of things.

Thats what laptops are ment for to me anyway, gaming! Theres plenty of new gaming laptops with just that in mind. Even the mobile 11-14 inch sector of laptops are getting into gaming. You need to clean it out probubly the most though. You have to take the entire thing apart and clean it with alcohol or with damp cloth, something to wipe grit that has plastered itself onto the machine. This will directly impact the performance of your machine, I know from first hand experience. Also you can reaply thermal paste to your chipsets and cpu/gpu, if you live near a radio shack they have toobs for like 2 bux I think. A fresh install of your operation system also will help.

i re ran the WEI to see if anything had failed and degraded my proformance
also something like this doesnt really happen unless you overclock/your fan fails for a few sec/mins right so this must be a false positive

thanks so really nothing to worry about eh? i never really saw it reach 100C but im thinking something mighta cought in my fan and stoped it spinning (ive seen a processor with no fan on it and it gets Hot FAST) and im thinking thats what happened because 484 C is insane)

also most of my stuff is games installed
theres like 7-8 games and that DATA D: drive is takeing half my drive for backing up my files which ide really like to remove that partition and use it for actual storage

Get a can of compressed air and clean out all your air vents. There's probably a ton of dust inside that's clogging it up. And since your constantly gaming, I would invest in a cooling pad to ensure your laptop doesn't have any hardware failures.

yea i plan on it when i can save the money (for the cooling pad i mean)
but im looking at speen fan and im idleing at 75 now\
it just really worried me when it said you laptop has shut down due to over heating (900F) or something like that
cause i would be able to feel the heat comeing of of it if it was that hot im like 3 feet from my laptop

no no, you have to clean laptops, its apart of owning them, its part of the fun. Just blowing a can of air into them isnt going to do it, you need to get into it and digg all that crap out from inside of it especially this line of laptop can get really really bad. After youve done this then you can used can of air on it every week or so.

If your temp reached 484c your laptop would be a ball of plastic. I highly doubt that could occure, it would have to be some type of glitch or something but Im not expert with temps so someone else might know better what that is all about.

the hell? no way it reached 900f(484C) that woulda set my wooden computer desk ablaze

Yea it will void your warranty, but once your warranty expires, don't wait a single day open it up and clean the vents and change the thermal grease. BTW 900F is impossible as far as I am concerned. My soldering iron heats to something close to that so if your laptop got to 900F your GPU and all the chips around it would just be floating since soldering melts at those temps and just a single tap on the side(or closing your cd drive) would render your notebook useless.

Yea, if its not a ball of plastic like jeffreybaks said :D :D :D. Your temps were probably around 100c if it turned off, so you might have seen 90c? I have a crappy tx-2 that heats my room (no need for a heater in the winter) and it goes up to 90c... Anyway, just under-power the CPU or look at the bright side :D :D :D

My HP Pavilion DV7 3067CL is very nearly identical to yours and it typically idles at 59C or so without my cooler and 49C with it on. Like others have suggested dust is most likely your problem. However investing in a laptop cooler would be a good idea.

Are you gaming on the laptop at your desk/table? If so, you can also try having the A/C adapter plugged into the laptop with the battery removed. Just be careful not to accidentally yank out the power cord while the computer is on. Your OS can corrupt with a sudden power loss.

In conjunction try all the suggestions others have posted.

-Blow out vents with compressed air can
-Apply better thermal grease to CPU
    -Use a non-plastic laptop cooler

Think of it as a large heatsink. But if the plastic one works well for your laptop, that's cool too. Actually it depends on the orientation of your fan/exhaust layout. If your laptop fan intakes air from the bottom of the laptop, then any cooler with fans blowing upward can help push more air into the system and effectively help cool the system more.

I have a couple Zalman coolers and I don't even power them up, just use as a heatsink.

But most notebooks have rubber feet that should insulate it... So maybe its just the increased airflow?

Hi, hope you dont mind me chiming in here with some thoughts, I`ve repaired quite a lot of heat damaged HP`s now (the heat problems are not just restricted to HP), the biggest problem with laptop cooling is the way they actually draw in air, air is drawn in through the bottom of the laptop through the fan assembly then across a small fine finned copper radiator before being blown out through the side or back vents. To my mind its a poor design as when you put the laptop on your `lap` the first thing that happens is you block the intake which reduces cooling drastically, secondly it also starts to suck the dust etc out your clothing/furniture/carpet whatever you have your laptop resting on. The majority of laptops I`ve stripped down have accumulated a mat of dust and crud on the inside of the radiator which ultimately leads to terminal overheating and blowing it out with an airduster etc only serves to drive the crud further inside your laptop or stop the fan.

I would recommend if your confident stripping the laptop down to remove the heatsink and fan assembly, thoroughly clean it out, clean off the old thermal compound from the cpu and heatsink and replace it with some high quality silver based compound (arctic silver or akasa are good makes) also replace the thermal pad on your gpu with a copper shim, from memory most HP`s are about 1.2mm and seat it with a small amount of the silver thermal compound. These mods will bring the temp down about 20% on most laptops. Time your on also update to the latest HP bios which keeps the fans running at a slightly higher speed to prevent over heating.

Hope some of this was some help :)

    John

P.S. Solder melts at approx 217 C, your laptop would have fallen apart at 494 lol

    Hi,
i have hp dv5 and it also have some heat problems, here are the necessary steps to solve the heating problem,
first of all yes get a air spray can and u don't have to open the laptop and void warranty u just have to clean the ventilation opening and fan.

second, u should used an CPU undervolting software i.e., rightmark CPU clock utility, or better but not free CPUgenie, these two programs work wonder in lowering temp. and doesn't effect performance.

    regards

If I had your notebook I would not clean/under-volt anything. And if my pavilion was still under warranty I would have just put it on my carpet turned one some cpu/gpu intensive game/program and watched it burn so they give me a replacement. Oh how I wish I still had my warranty    I did not pay mad money for a fast notebook to have to slow it down since some engineer did not do his job right...
