I just got my dv6000 laptop, it looks awesome!!! However, I could not find the XP pro disc which was supposed to be an individual product with my purchase! I called HP service, but they told me that there's no XP disc in my purchase. I need to burn recovery discs myself from the recovery partition or oder xp pro from HP separately, if I want to reinstall my OS. I got confused about this, coz I had experience with Dell laptops that they will send you an OS disc you odered online as a separate disc in the package.
Here is a part of my item description:
* Genuine Windows XP Professional
* Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83 GHz)
* FREE Upgrade to 15.4" WXGA BrightView
in which "* Genuine Windows XP Professional" just means a pre-installation of XP pro???
btw, is it possible to reinstall a totally clean XP pro without those annoying softwares from recovery discs?

not sure about HP, but the way it works with dell is that if you use the OEM XP disc to reformat/reinstall, it's a clean copy of XP with no bloatware. if you reformat/reinstall from the image partition, it goes to factory settings which has the bloatware. it may be different for HP.
i would definitely contact customer care and request the discs (without bloatware) as you paid for an XP license with the purchase of your comptuer and are entitled to a copy of the operating system without any bloatware. -
i got mine included in the package....
better check your PO if you have selected a separate XP Pro CD -

I got one on an order placed thru www.COSTCO.com back in April-2006.
At the time it was a $10 option, listed as a OS-re-install disc.
Here recently they've changed the wording to "restore dvd" or something like that and it's $18. I've heard reports that it is the "restore dvd" and not the OS re-install disc...
Costco site mirrors the HP site, at least last time I checked so HP may indeed NOT be shipping OS re-install discs..
Before you call them I'd go to HP PartSurfer to get the part number of the disc you are expecting /wanting: http://www.partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main -
Thanks guys! -
You mean OS reinstall dvd cannot do a clean installion of XP pro. but where can I find a OS-re-install disc like yours? -
fdlazarte:
Can you install a clean XP pro with that XP Pro CD sent with your package? -
Before you call them I'd go to HP PartSurfer to get the part number of the disc you are expecting /wanting: http://www.partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main
NOTE: It takes Hp a "while" to get a listing up for some models. All items, or models may not have a listing on Partsurfer.

System Recovery DVD and the OS install disc being two totally differant things (and part numbers)
The OS install disc was listed as a OS install /re-install disc back in April-2006
$10 thru www.costco.com http://www.costco.com/CTO/HPLanding.aspx?Prodid=10029570&whse=BC&topnav=&browse= -
Doubt it... Unless you're still within the 21 day return window.... Tell them you need the OS install disc, otherwise they're getting it back. -
i dont know i think you might be able to if you call them up 19 dollars is 19 dollars and if they want the money they'll let you buy it.
-
They reduce the price if it's ordered as part of a laptop sale. -
Bad luck! I just called HP tech. support to ask for a xp pro reinstall cd, but they told me that I cannot get it, even I return my new laptop now and then order a new one online. Because they only provide a system recovery DVD in stead of OS backup disc from now on.
A solution the tech. guy told me is that I can borrow any XP pro disc to install, but activate it with the product key on the bottom of my laptop. -
but with the recovery DVD, it will install all the bloatware included on your notebook. -
so wat is the best way to get rid of the bloatware and hav aclean os on a hp dv6000t

Hopefully, you backed up your c:\i386 folderand don't foget to use the productkey on your sticker, which works great for me.

is this possible with windows mce?
-
-
-
Yes, Windows MCE is just Windows XP Professional with the second MCE disk. They only stripped active directory which most people don't use and during the install it will ask for a second disk. Ignore the label of the directory, because it only copies the files you put in their, so it doesn't matter. It makes bootable whatever you put into their only, it doesn't change any window files.
If you order your laptop and did not purchase the reinstallation disc (OS only), I do not think you can order it for $10 or $19 dollars. Otherwise they would have to purchase two licenses from Microsoft (your laptop is using one right now). They might be able to sell you a OEM disc after the fact but that is $130 and retail is much higher. At retail (Bestbuy-Circuitcity) if you buy your laptop their, you don't have that option in some cases so you are SOL. -
Actually, I think you can reorder the recovery disc from Hp. If you go to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3177435&lang=en
and look for CD-rom order pages, it shows you can order the disc and it will ask you the serial no. of your notebook. However, I don't know how much they will charge. -
I don't think the recovery disc could help me out, because a tech. support guy told me that the recovery disc can not help me do a clean restallation of XP pro. With the recovery disc, you can just set back your system into original out-of-factory status, which includes those annoying bloatwares.

Go download a torrent of Windows XP Professional and apply my guide. Match the service pack number of your laptop (slipstreaming a service pack) to the torrent download. Look for the i386 folder on you c: drive of your laptop.
It would be nice if HP included a utility like their recovery disc that burns a Microsoft disc. Store a copy of the disc on the laptop. However, I think Microsoft would not be to happy about people having a copy of their OS on a blank CD. I think MS would want people to stick to a branded disc. -
i dindtunderstand wat u said abt"They only stripped active directory which most people don't use and during the install it will ask for a second disk. Ignore the label of the directory, because it only copies the files you put in their, so it doesn't matter. It makes bootable whatever you put into their only, it doesn't change any window files."pls xplain

I was explaning the difference between Windows MCE and Professional. MCE has different icon and the media player is different looking. Active Directory is some feature that xp pro has that MCE doesnt. It is something for the corporate environment and is nothing to be concerned about. You can do a google search and it will explain the differences. From what I have heard, it is Windows Professional souped up with Media programs.
If you are a newbie than I would not try to use the guide.
Is XP pro disc supposed to be in the package?
