Now that the dv2000t is out, will the dv1000t be discontinued? My local Office Depot and Circuit City have discontinued their dv1000 models, but it still seems to be available for CTO from HP, TechDepot, and Costco. Best Buy also still has a retail dv1000.

I actually like the dv1000 better than the dv2000, so I'd like to get one before they are gone. On the other hand, the prices seem to be dropping, and I can afford to wait a bit. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

It probably won't be for a good while, even the old v2000s are still there. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

My DV1000 crashed repeatedly when running Windows Vista Release Candidate 1. I had to roll it back to Windows XP SP2. That's probably why they discontinued it, I'll bet.

Release Candidate software is still beta software. And considering Vista drivers are still in beta stages it's no surprise that you had some problems.

One of the problems I had with Vista was that it detected my videocard as having 640MB of RAM. Beta software is beta software, even if it is a designated Release Candidate.

Your system should have no problem running Vista. Just be patient and wait until Vista has been available for some time before upgrading. And when you do get it, do a FRESH install. Do not upgrade.

Interesting, my dv1000 has been running Vista RC1 for a few weeks now without problems.

That's probably why they discontinued it, I'll bet.

No, that'd be software related, not hardware. They discontinued it because the newer models were released. In this case, the dv2000.

haha yup. Whats even more funny is when I went into the BIOS and bumped the video memory up from 128MB dedicated to 128MB + 128MB shared. I went back into Vista and somehow my video RAM went down to 512MB. I don't understand how a videocard with 640MB of RAM could score a 2.5 ;)

What was strange was that my DV1000 ran Vista beta 2 ok (though it was a much flakier build). But the DV1000 was ok with it. I did a full install of RC1, the fan worked inconsistently and the machine would overheat, and shut off.

The HP helpdesk technician told me the DV1000's they were selling last year wouldn't support Vista, but some more recently-built ones will. I don't know if that's true or not, but I know mine didn't like it (mine was built about Oct-2005).

I'm sure Microsoft will eventually get the bugs out of Vista and my 1000 will run it, but it ain't there yet (well, my machine don't like it, anyway).

Well, my dv1000 was built in Febuaray 2005, so it can't be a pre-year date thing.

It's just beta software. That can happen.

And HP is clearly just trying to get people to buy new hardware. Any computer can run Vista that meets the requirements. The only thing is that your DV1000 might not be able to run the Aero Glass interface. But... do you really need transparency and window animations anyway?
