I have an option to buy a dv5t right now but it doesn
t have the infinity display. Does it really make that big of a difference between that and a regular screen?
Could I buy a regular dv5t and send it into HP and have them install an infinity display?

The infinity display is worse than the normal screen. It increases glare and dust gets caught between the infinity display and the LCD which is very difficult (impossible?) to get out. I would avoid the infinity display at all costs.

But isn't the screen supposed to have better color?

No, it is just a sheet of plastic over the screen. I don't see the appeal honestly.

Actually I don't either. It's on my HDX and aside from protecting the lcd screen, I don't see what else it's good for. Just marketing I guess. And does produce a lot of glare.

So, let me actually answer two threads in a single reply.

    (1) Infinity is a piece of glass over your LCD that makes the display "look" very stylish. But it doesn't do anything for color. (Some people claim that it gives slightly better dynamic range between bright & dark in movies; others claim that it creates glare. I can attest that it does add glare, because I went to a big box store, and compared a laptop that had infinity vs one without. I much preferred no-infinity!)

    (2) 1280x800 vs 1680x1050. Remember that all this is going to go on the same size screen, which is approximately 13 inch wide (I hope you speak inch ;) ) by 8.2 inch tall (more or less). I have the 1280x800. Pulling out my handy-dandy calculator, I get that the WXGA (1280x800) gives 98 pixels per inch (more or less). The WXGA+ (1680x1050) is about 127 pixels/inch. For the same "font model," the 1680 screen will have text be maybe 25-30% smaller, unless you change the font setting to "large fonts" (for 120 dpi). Given the age of my eyes & bifocals, I'm perfectly happy with 98 pixels/inch (dots per inch, or dpi) and standard size fonts. Don't even think about changing display resolution, though!!!! Anything except native resolution on an LCD is going to be slightly blurry! (even to my eyes!). If I go to 120 dpi fonts (large fonts, which I would need to do if I had the 1680 display), I wind up having the same amount of text across my screen. Therefore, I have no advantage going to the 1680-wide display on a 15.4" laptop. But that's my personal choice.

    Hope that helps!

I have the infinity display on my DV5 (i didnt have any choice as they are pre config models in the UK). Its purely for style in my opinion. It looks great, but it does create a little extra glare. If I had a choice, I would leave out the infinity display.

I've got inifinit display option. I really like it. But as said, it's really preference on the aesthetics. To me it makes the computers look much more sleeker. I don't get tired of seeing my laptop everyday because of it.

Do Not Get The INFINITY SCREEN! I just got scammed by HP today because I got the Infinity Display and this display is nice and everything but gave me two major problems. First is that Dust gets trapped between the two screens and that with the Infinity display, your keys will hit the screen which will cause blemishes.

HP s did not want to cover my laptop by warranty because they said it was due to physical damage, but honestly it was because it is a design flaw and many others with the screen also came about the same problems as me.

So, if you do have the Infinity Screen and have blemishes or dust, call them and complain!!!! Seriously call them, because I made them put that issue on a "ISSUE TRACKER" and if more people join me and complain, then they will put that screen in RECALL and have it replaced with a new screen. Even if you had the screen and damaged it trying to take out the dust, they will fix it as well for you. So call them, complain, tell them that you and many others with the screen have dust, and hopefully they will recall the screen and put brand new screens on out notebooks!!!

So call HP and complain if you have DUST or KEY BLEMISHES on your screen!!! They won't replace it right away, they just need to know that it is a very common problem and that there is a flaw in their design!

If you got that problem with dust or Blemishes, call them because I want to build the amount of people who has the problem and address it to HP because they think that it is rare to have dust in the screen.
