After hearing all the problems regarding the GPU "crashing" and whatnot, I am wondering if it's "safe" to buy a 8510p? What are my chances of getting a problematic laptop?

I don't know, I think you have a good chance of getting a problematic one. That said, I don't really think the GPU crash is as bad as everyone says. When I had, all that happened is that the screen would freeze for 2-3 seconds, go blank, then reboot. The whole thing took far less than 30 seconds and didn't happen too often for me. Then, for me, the problem was fixed by the HP GPU driver update, but that hasn't worked for everyone. Despite it's problems, the 8510p is still one of the best out there. You'll be hard pressed to beat its, power & size & build quality for it's price. It's equivalent would be the T61p when they have sales.

I have absolutely no problems with my computer and I have owned it for 2 or 3 (i forget) months. Just the rare crash with vista... but thats not a graphics problem

The thing you have to keep in mind is that most people who come to these forums are either seeking help or want to discuss their machine. So from reading all the posts about any particular laptop, especially a few months after they've been released and the hype dies down, it's easily going to look like the machine has all these problems etc.

This is especially the case when a laptop has a crash-related problem like the 8510p. If you look at the Lenovo forums you'll find many threads on problems relating to the T61p and 4gb of RAM, or the T61p's screen, etc. Hell, check out Dell's fiasco with their latest Inspiron lines + grainy screen, audio static, CPU whine, etc. The same deal goes for most laptop models.

I'm not saying the 8510p is perfect, just saying to take everything you read here with a grain of salt :p That includes the good as well as the bad.

edit: Oh yea, I'd still recommend it.
