I leave my DV1000 on all the time overnight (and much more) in an unairconditioned room. Honestly if a laptop is not able to run 24-7 then the manufacturer needs to take the design back to the drawing board and provide a better cooling solution (IMHO).

You'll be fine. I would make sure the LCD turns off though, no need to burn that more than you have to.

I would use a desktop to do that. I don't like torrent to eat my laptop HD since it cost much more to buy 2.5" HD. I heard many stories that HD were damaged by running too much torrent.

For heat producing, downloading stuff will not be as much as your surfing the net. CPU will have higher load when you open a new IE compare to constantly downloading. So your machine will stay cool even if there is no A/C.

Security is the most important concern. Personally, I only leave my Linux box on. I don't trust XP at this point.

Just make sure your system's power settings won't go into a suspend mode for being 'idle' too long.

i only have laptops in the house, but i hedge my bets by using an external 3.5" drive for stuff like that.

I use an external drive for torrents. My last laptop drive was eaten up by torrents.

As far as the leaving on goes, my laptop's on 24/7

Torrent use aside, it is better for the life of your HDD to leave it on all the time as opposed to constant power cycles.

whichever one only powers down the screen.
for clarification, i said torrent use aside, because that constant read/write would probably be bad for the hdd.

I never turn off my E1705, I use it as a desktop and it's on all the time, downloading movies from the net too. That is why they call it desktop replacement - you use it just like a desktop.

same here. I haven't turned off my lappy in about 3 weeks. It downloads, it XVIDS my TV shows I record on my actual desktop, etc. Never had a prob.

To make sure you don't get your lappy all dusty, just go into power settings, and set it to when you close the screen, that it won't actually do anything (normaly it will standby or shutdown).

Guys, for the HP Laptops, does air come out from the keyboard? I've left my laptop on for days, but had to leave the laptop lid on a 20 degree angle to stop dust from appearing on the surface, and to also allow the heat to flow from the keyboard, if there is any.

I rarely turn off my dv8000t. I leave it docked and powered on for days at a time. I leave it on everyday to Tivo my favorite daytime shows :D

I have a dv5000z and it's on pretty much 24/7. I only turn it off when I am away from home.

Its debable whether spinning down/up vs powering on the system is better.

One person can argue that avoiding spin up/downs will prevent wear on the drive, someone else can argue that keeping something spinning and at 4800-7200 RPMs 8-16 hours a day more than you need is going to hurt more because of extra heat and degrading lubricant.

So, if your not going to use the system for more than a 2-4 hours, let it spin down the drives and/or shut down the system. Or better yet, let the OS decide unless you have a *reason* to change it -- like using it in a scenario where you constantly are coming and going 30 minutes or more at a time.

There are simply far more likely causes of premature failure that are beyond your control it is just not worth worrying about. Thats what backups, RAID, and a good warranty are for.

The battery doesn't care if the laptop is on or off. As long as there's a power cord hooked up, the battery will always be charnging until it is done. It won't overcharge and it will never be used while the power cord is on.

My previous Compaq Laptop was a 1720US, which i still have and i left it on 24 hours a day, and now i have a V2000z and i had it since sept of last year. Honestly this laptop is constantly on, 24 hours a day i would say this laptop has been on at least 3/4 of a year already. Leaving a computer on for long periods of time should never be a problem.

Thats incorrect, power cycles (im assuming you mean turning on and off) are not what hurts a hd, its how many times the arm moves over the disk surface. Leaving a notebook/pc on (downloading) will keep the arm moving, which is worse overall for the life of the hd. I leave mine on only when downloading and I leave the screen cracked open to disperse heat, I download all files to an external usb HD though I dont want to fry mine for some stupid torrent. Hope this helps you guys out.

Note quite -- a lithium ion battery degrades over time, but the rate they degrade at is influenced by what charge is on it when not in use and the temperature its stored at.

If you keep a laptop ON, fully charged, all the time, it will degrade faster than one thats kept partially charged and off when the laptop is not in use. Although there is no difference between keeping it on mains or unplugged when the laptop is off.
