Is there anyway I could modify the remote so that the standby button would just turn off the laptop instead? And is there anyway to allow fast forwarding with the remote through windows media player?

Yes you can do it through the registry, its quite difficult though

Try fast forwarding using the arrow keys in the remote, not the FF button

How would I do it through the registry? I have a dv3550eg and I want to re-configure the buttons on the remote control a bit, but it seams to be difficult.

Any ideas? I will give WinLirc I try when I get home, but I am not that optimistic.

This is another option I will try: http://mediacenterguides.com/book/export/html/31

I'll reply to myself then ;)

I managed to get the little express-card remote control working with XBMC (play, pause, stop, volume, back, context, etc) by changing the registry around. I use a RC6 remote that came with my DV3550eg (WinMC compatible).

With a few exceptions, the remote pretty much only causes the keyboard events to happen (every button on the remote is mapped to a button on the keyboard, for example 'Ok' maps to 'Return').

This document explains where in the registry and how you have to change things:
    http://mediacenterguides.com/sites/default/files/IRCodes_ReportMappingTable_InputINF.pdf

and this document contains the keyboard event codes:
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/6/1/161ba512-40e2-4cc9-843a-923143f3456c/translate.pdf

On my computer the settings are stored in:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HidIr\Remotes\745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da

And here is the export from that directory (use it as guidance if needed):
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UMZ1A5CI

While I was changing things around I used Eventghost with the keyboard plugin to see that the correct events was sent when I pressed the remote. It helped a lot.

Good luck and if you figure something new out let me know ;)

Rust1234 (and others members of course)

I have a HP Pavilion dv4-1123us Intel Core Duo T 55800 - 4Gb RAM with remote control (rc6) included (one that fits inside the laptop), running Vista 64 Home Premium conected via home network to a Synology CS 407e as a NAS server (where I will put all my videos and music). I use XBMC as a media center, and I would love to have the remote control that came with the laptop as the remote control for XBMC. Also I would like to disable the HP media center and the windows media center and use the controls in the laptop (the one“s for DVD player) as controls for the same XBMC media center.
Actually, the arrows, the ok button (as return) and the volume control are working. I think it would be great to have the play, ff, rev, pause working for music and films in the media center and one button for the Esc (the same esc in the computer that let me come back in some functios in the XBMC media center).
As I know nothing about remote controls and your thread was the first one (after a long research) talking about HP remote controls I am here asking for some help.
Please consider that I opened all files, PDFs and pages you posted and it is very difficult to understandt what to do with it.
    Can you help me please?

    Regards

    Mario

Check the XBMC settings for something called "Global Hotkeys". If not, you will probably need to download a plug in for it.

It works for winamp and itunes, (even the remote).

Try Autohotkey if you don't want to mess with registries. It might work. I did it for an Intervideo IR Remote a while back, most liekly would work with the remote of HP.

    Hi,

yes it is bit tricky. Maybe this page helps: http://mediacenterguides.com/advancedremotes

In the registry there is a table which maps a button on the remote-control to a certain keyboard click. You will have to look at what keyboard buttons XBMC is using and the map them (using the registry) to the correct button on the remote.

When I looked at this, XBMC did not support any global hotkeys.

I ended up trying MediaPortal (it also has support for live TV) which worked very well. The remote worked out of the box, without registry modifications. MediaPortal also has a nice plug-in for TV-Shows and good looking skins that you'll recognize from XBMC.
