the keyboard makes a really loud "thwack" noise? I was reading some user-reviews off of Cnet, and these are some of the complaints:

    - the fan runs almost constantly at a low level, and occasionally at a very loud higher level. This was so loud that I had to pack it up and use a library computer.
    - The keys are a little "clicky." The spacebar is worse, making a loud "thwack." Not good for taking notes in class or library.
    - there is a constant whining sound coming from the CPU, i had to use a third-party program to solve it. ridiculous
    - Balance (feels if we move the LCD screen backwards, it might fell)
    - Start up time (4+ minutes from button press to actual use)

..And then you have conflicting reviews like this:

    - Many people complain about the quietness of this machine: I got to say it runs VERY QUIET.
    - CPU whining doesn't exist or at least I couldn't hear it on this machine (I did on others though, non-HP).
    - Boots up quickly, love this beast. Recommending it to all my friends.

Could some owners confirm/deny these complaints? I might just go for the dv2500t instead of the dv6500t, but I'm not sure.

Additional question: Do you guys think the difference between a 14" and a 15" will be significant? I have to pay just a little bit more to upgrade from a 2500 to a 6500.

    1. There have been bona-fide complaints of the dv6500t running hot, esp. around the HDD. However, if you're not doing anything intensive, the fan doesn't start as often. The fan doesn't run any louder than most other laptops.
    2. Very sparse complaints of a key (esp. the spacebar) striking another, making that click. Doesn't happen often at all, the keyboard isn't any louder than other laptops. The special keyboard in the dv2500se or Verve is actually very quiet.
    3. The CPU whirl is probably the most controversial piece. It seems that it was only a limited run of CPUs that make a high pitched squeal while in power-save mode (aka reduced FSB speed). None of the Pavilions that I have seen have had the sound.
    4. No complaints what-so-ever. Not sure how you would un-balance a laptop, the LCD screen weight is tiny compared to the rest of the computer.
    5. HP has a lot of bloatware on its machines, much like most other consumer level manufacturers. Once you get rid of the bloatware (uninstall or clean vista install) startup time is normal and based on the hardware, not the brand.

Finally, I prefer the size/weight of the 2500 over the 6500. A 14.1 is easier to carry around.
