I have a dv4000 and lately the DVD±R/RW has been acting up.
Lately I have to push the side many times to get it to either work or eject.
Mostly hanging. Would this be a bad drive or just a setting or connection problem?
    I hope I won't have to by a new drive. :(

...Or return to HP and tell them to fix and foot the bill, provided you're still within warranty

I got that same problem a little while after i brought my dv5139us. However I had to reinstall windows MCE because my Visual Basic 2003 was giving a little trouble with the IIS. After doing a clean install I never got the problem again. Could be a software issue?

I'm thinking about doing a clean imstall with WinXP Pro, (I have WinXP Home now). Maybe try that.

First, I'll take out the drive and clean it and put it back in and hope it was a connection problem.

Can't return it as it is 13 months old now.

    Anymore ideas?

If it craps out, get a new drive. Don't go through HP, their's cost around $300 - $400. Look on mwave.com or newegg. I replaced my notebook drive with a Pioneer slot loading DVD RW DL for less than $80. It works great. Burns pretty quick too.

What about eBay? I've had good luck buying stuff there.

Ebay's a crap shoot now and most of the stuff sold is gray market or refurb. Many manufacturers won't warranty them. Check Ben's Bargains, Fatwallet or cdfreaks.com for some pretty good deals.

That said, if you've dealt with a particular seller and trust them, the price is usually right.
