--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I used my laptop just fine this morning.
I put it in standby, unplugged it and took it to school (didn't use it though).
Just came home, plugged it in, opened it up and now it's been at the WindowsXP loading screen for over 4 minutes and 10 seconds now.
My average loading time for that part of the startup is maybe 10 seconds at most.
Kind of worried. My laptop had been damaged from a 2 foot fall recently (but only noticeable damage was cosmetic). Whenever I opened up the screen the screen would go out of control. The fan inside needs to be replaced (it sounds like it is screaming and its rythym is being interrupted despite nothing be stuck inside).
Now this. Anybody have any ideas?

any luck?(10 char limit)

Well I start it up and it gives the "Windows did not load successfully" screen where you can choose Safe mode, Start Normally or Last known good configuration.
Neither are working. Safemode attempt gets stuck in the command prompt screen, the rest just get stuck at the Windows XP loading screen. After about 20 minutes the screen just goes black and does nothing. -
It sounds more like it is a problem with the OS than anything, so I wouldn't say that your laptop is dying, but just having an OS problem. This could be due to damage to certain parts of the HDD where system files are located, but I doubt that. One thing that always works for me in situations like this is using scandisk over the HDD. This will help scan for bad sectors on the HDD, as well as fix OS errors. The only problem with this option is, since you can't even get into Safemode, is that you will have to take your HDD out and put it in another computer (I can't recall if the recovery console allows you to do a scandisk).
So did you go into Safemode with command prompt, or just the standard safemode that appears at the top of the screen? -
That fall did damaged your HDD's sectors, and/or damaged one of your headers... HDD's are Very fragile those headers hover just millimeters above those disks... with no support.... so when you drop it the header hits the disk, it can take out a couple thousand sectors from a sudden jolt.

Try a repair install with XP and do disks checks (if your bios has this)
HDD's are quite sensitive to heavy shocks and bumps -
The fan didn't start acting up like this until a month and a half ago. -
Ok. I switched out my sister's HDD with mine and put mine in hers.
Results:
My HDD didn't load and did the same thing in her laptop.
Her HDD loaded fine on my laptop.

I put mine back in my laptop and let it sit for a few minutes. It went to the disk check for accuracy thing. It appeared to skip over the C: scan altogether and did a successful scan of the D: drive. -
well theres your answer.. new HDD is needed.. backup whatever data you can now as it might completely fail sooner or later

IDE = Bottom -
So will these work with my damaged HDD?
Thing is, I was going to purchase an external HDD (about 500gb) to back up this baby and send it off to HP to get it repaired.
My desktop only has 80 gigs max (only 15 aren't used) and my laptop has a 100gb storage system. So theoretically if I did buy an external enclosure and an extra ex-HDD, I'd have to plug both up to my crappy desktop. Not sure if my desktop could handle that much powerful tasks.
Of course, this is generously assuming that the external enclosure will even read my damaged HDD.
As I said before, my HDD wouldn't work in my sister's laptop (she has the same dv5000 as me outside of a few things like RAM,video card, etc.), but her HDD worked in my laptop flawlelssly. -
Give me a few minutes to take a picture of my HDD. not sure if it is connector or pin
-
yeah the OS went corrupt when some of the sectors it needs to run.
yeah your hard drive isn't dead yet.... but who knows how long it could last, i would only recommend turning it on when you are going to remove data from it, otherwise its a time bomb, you don't know how long it will stay alive, or if you are damaging more of the hard drive by keeping it on.
the fact that one of header is still active enough to read that it even has an OS on it means its not too far gone. -
look at the picture i posted, it has both of the connectors...

Here you go:

EDit: sorry didn't see your pics. -
Sata Hdd...

Yes I agree with funnyx only do when you read to pull the data off the disc
if you have desktop with sata in you can just plug the hard disk into that pull data off no adapter need if you power sluppy has sata power connect and you mainbaord has sata port -
Sorry if I seem to need a bit more help than usual, I just want to get the right one and get this problem fixed asap.
Already talked to the HP lady, said to contact them asap after I get my data backed up so I can get my laptop repaired immediately. -
Here is what would work for you;
VANTEC NST-260SU-BK Aluminum 2.5" eSATA & USB2.0 External Enclosure -
Or will it read it like a removable disk? -

Easy way to find out, take off those 4 screws on each side of the enclosure over the HDD. Because that drive you have IS a SATA drive, so chances are it isn't a hitachi.
-
Hey Funny, sorry I'm late.
But are you 100% sure that this

Is the right one for my HDD?
Want to make sure 100% before I make this purchase. -
did you every get the drive? work you know if had desktop with sata all need it cable you can plug it in pull the data off it provide it not damaged or need data recovery
-

Ok. I got it in today and it works. The data appears to be there. Now I'm just going to purchase a Western Digital External to backup the data, then send my laptop back to HP for repairs.
Can someone explain the process in backing up the data? What do I need, what I need to buy. Any free software, etc. -
Aight. Finally got my external HDD now. Time to backup my dieing internal.
Is there a better way to do it than just simply copy and paste? I want it to be exactly how I had it before the problems occured (as in when I get my laptop back in the mail from repairment, I want to just load what's backed up on the HDD).
---
I'm trying the good ole copy and paste method but that doesn't seem to be working out that well. I keep getting this message about request cannot be completed because of an I/O error.
Anybody have any suggestions? Some of my video files on the damaged internal play fine on VLC or WMP, but then I can't seem to copy them.
Is my Dv5000t dead?
