Hello,
I just purchased an HP dv6xxx from Future Shop.
It was a brand new item. The original HP tape was used to seal the box. The security sticker taping the bag covering the laptop was untampered.
But when I took out the laptop, I noticed a few hairline scratches on the inner shiny black lcd edging. The screen had a small smudge from a fingerprint. The Litescribe and energy star sticker had one corner slightly bent, and you could tell that someone tried to peel it off and then stick it back on.
Also, the keyboard case, on 2 top edges where it meets with the speaker/quick button cover. the edges do not line up perfectly, and are off by 1-2mm.
I was wondering if it is normal for the assembly process to produce such defects, or are these laptops supposed to be in pristine condition from the factory?
Other than the above, there is nothing else indicating it was used, or refurbished. The install was brand new. No other faults with the laptop.
Thanks!

Well, that's Future Shop's problem, not HP's. If you purchase a computer from HP, it's BRAND new. No scratches or anything, like you said above. If I were you, I'd confont Future Shop about it.

Scratches? - Can happen during assembly, but I think that is very rare...you could be right.
Screen fingerprint? - Could happen during assembly, that cannot indicate anything either way.
Edges not perfect? - Sign of poor build quality on that particular notebook, not necessarily an indication of it being a refurb.
Honestly, there may not be enough here to say anything, but it sounds like you are unhappy with it...and that is the most important thing. I would give Future Shop a call. Its possible they screwed up and put a refurb out as new, or that HP just didn't do their job right and built it wrong. Definitely push for another new one. -
Are you sure that you didn't purchase a refurbished HP? They are all in brand new packaging.

My 6510b was brand new and the first thing i noticed when i unpacked it was a fingerprint on the lcd. How it got there who knows but it works fine so i don't care.

I had a similar incident with futureshop canada, I bought a 'brand new' (Hp) desktop and when I powered it on windows had already been installed, fresh but installed and setup up??? I just kept it, but it was a desktop sooo... not much can go wrong; laptops I woudn't keep if at all possible try and exchange it.

My dv2799 that I recieved direct from HP on Friday had a large smudged area on the LCD as well, even though it had several protective sheets between itself and the keyboard, who knows how it got there

i had the same problem when i had my first dv6500t.
the inner black casing near my web camera had thick hairline scratches. and there was an off balance when my dv6500t was on a flat table. -
Sounds like its been tampered with but its possible it was from factory creation. Check the serial bar code on the bottom.
Make sure the original HP bar code is still intact and not replaced with a concealed one. Also call up HP to confirm warranty using the serial keys on the bottom. -
Descriptions are kind of vague. Can we see photos?
The stickers are usually not aligned properly (they were slapped on and expected to be torn off anyway), but they do not mean someone has tampered with them.
Refurbished units don't have the HP security seal, just normal cellophane. -

I never had a seal on my laptop which came from BestBuy. The box was taped well though. No torn papers from the box to show a re-boxed one.

I would try to replace it because something like this happened to me.
I bought a dv6646us at circuit city and I brought it home. When I opened to box, I took out the laptop and opened the bag. I took out the laptop and noticed it did not have that plastice cover to protect the lid. then I opened the laptop and there was fingerprints on the screen. When I turned it on, It windows vista had a user on, and needed A password. I took it back to circuit city and got a new one, opened it up and noticed the differences. Here in Hawaii, there is no restocking fee on open box items up until 14 days after. I wanted a full refund at first, but when I got the new one, I was really happy with it.
So they probably mixed up a refurb with the new ones. That's what circuit city did to me. -
they probably used it for show on the shelves and returned it back in the box.
When buying a new laptop always open the box infront of the clerk and make sure all is well. Check all accessories are there, no fingerprints or anything funny.
Is my brand new laptop "brand new"??
