Hey all, I have a large topic at http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-laptops-processor-what-do-you-recommend.html

I just replaced my AMD motherboard, processor, and heatsink with Intel parts
and I decided to create a new post for this problem I've just noticed. Everytime I turn on my laptop it shuts off within 1 minute so I wasnt sure what the problem was. I took out the Wireless adapter, dvd drive, Hard drive, 1 RAM stick, and unplugged the display just to see if those were causing any problems for it.

Well I was just randomly thinking and I remembered the new heatsink I received didn't cover my GPU... it only covered my processor and chipset. I went straight to the dv7 manual and searched up the "Heatsink for Intel processors with 512 MB of discrete memory" on ebay and sure enough, it looked different than mine. Is this the reason why it is shutting down in 1 minute?

Yes, the GPU is quickly overheating.

Also, you are using thermal paste, correct?

Yes I'm using the arctic silver 5 on the processor. But the chipset has a 'thermal pad' on it. Should I use the arctic silver 5 on the chipset as well?

No, the thremal pads will suffice. But you will need the proper heatsink so that the GPU is covered and able to transfer it's heat properly.
