I'm curious on how scratch resistant it is. Owners, how would you rate its scratch resistance ? Anyone have an example where these laptops were not scratched, but other laptops would have been ?

I'll turn it into wood...

The things that you have read about in some reviews are coming from the videos that HP released when they launched the Elitebooks series, which of course doesn't mean that people should start abusing their notebooks for no reason.
These are about the steel wool and so-called "aircraft-inspired" aluminum finishing as they advertise it.

And a slightly more interesting version of the popular "Dude, I can stand on my notebook" demonstration and so on.

Now of course, by all means, do buy one and test it out yourself, Intoxicate will lend you his belt sander if that aluminum turns out to be way too aircraft-inspired, and then Han will help you with the exterior decoration especially if you want an wood-inspired notebook or something. -
You don't have to buy a whole notebook to test this out. Just purchase the lid cover part (about $50) and try to scratch it. It is scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof, which means if you scratch it repeatedly, you'll see fine hairline scratches, but these aren't generally visible unless you place it under strong light at an angle.
If you try to do this to other notebook lids which are coated with a layer ot paint, you will scratch the paint off. HP no longer applies paint to the exterior of most of its notebook products. -

Is the 8730w or 8530w lid really scratch resistant to wool pads ?
