I thought the Envy 14 Radiance was an IPS panel, but just want to make sure? How does it compare to the MacBook Pro?

No it is not an IPS Panel. It is just a very good color-enhanced LED TN (RGB TN LED). The only IPS-optioned laptop in the world is the Elitebook 8740w with DreamColor 2 Option. Not even MBP's use IPS.

In-plane switching (IPS) was a technology developed in 1996 originally by Hitachi as a method to improve viewing angles, by reducing white-color washing and a method to enhance color, often above the 6-bit pixel color rate most TN limits. As a result, more variety of colors can be expressed on an IPS (above the TN's average limitation of 16.7 million colors to above 1 billion colors!).

Twisted nematic (TN) is the standard type of LCD technology that we all came to know and hate. Its much cheaper to produce TN screens than IPS and it gets limited in pixel color rate (6-bit max alone at 16.7 million colors) and the vertical viewing angles are atrocious (lots of white-washing).

Screens like Radiance or Dell's RGB+ LED are TN, but they use some hybrid technology derived from IPS that helps to enhance color contrasts and viewing angles and try to implement more color ranges. However, it still won't defeat the true IPS.

Also one more note, IPS screens do have a slower response time timing than a TN, but most people rather sacrifice the response time for the better color and angles.

Also yes, the only mobile IPS screen in the market today is exclusive to the HP Elitebook 8740w, only if you are willing to pay the $500 upgrade!

I believe DreamColor 1 was TN. ONLY DreamColor 2 is IPS.

No, the IPS is available as external monitors and it is used on the iPad/iPhone. I meant if you want a laptop with IPS as an option, HP Elitebook are the only way to go. Also, I don't think so for TV's as TV's need that fast response time.

PS: It is OK KJ! As long as I was informative, that is all what it matters! Also, I named my current laptop after her lolz. (Nerd much?)

I believe most of the decent LCD TVs on the market these days all use IPS panels. Since they are bigger screens than standard PC monitors, people tend to look at them from a variety of angles (multiple people sitting in various places in a room). I do know that some are PVA or MVA, but I would imagine that only your bargain basement, 32" or smaller models are TN. Maybe some of the LED displays are TN, though, I don't know.

Remember that not all TN panels are created equal. The Radiance display is a perfect example of this, just like the screen in my previous UL30A or my girlfriend's XPS M1530 were examples of how horrible they could be.

Yes, but the 8540w uses a Dreamcolor 2 screen. The 8730w was the one with Dreamcolor 1 (maybe the 8530w, too, I don't know) that was TN only. Amusingly enough, the 8740w screen is not listed as a Dreamcolor 2, but merely as "Dreamcolor". We owners usually tend to call it a Dreamcolor 2 just to avoid confusion with the Dreamcolor 1 of the 8730w. The downside of the 8540w IPS screen (IMO) is that it's 16:9, rather than the much nicer 16:10 that I'm typing on right now.

Didn't know that the 8540w has a selection as well. Thanks for clarifying! Regardless, only HP and Lenovo I think offers IPS screens on their top-selection laptops I believe for the current market.

I don't recall Lenovo offering an IPS screen presently; I do know that there was an aftermarket AFFS screen that some users modded into their Thinkpads aftermarket, but I don't think it was offered that way from Lenovo. As far as I'm aware, HP is the only manufacturer offering IPS screens as a factory installation at present.

I believe Lenovo currently have a X201 with IPS screen, but it's hard to find and only 12".
