I'm going to try and install leopard on my system, but i just wanted to know that if something goes wrong it isn't the end of the world and the horsemen won't be riding in :p

here's my question, does the HP recovery disc (burned on DVDs of course) act as a windows vista disc? as in if i put in the drive will the NB be able to boot from it?

It should just boot off it once you power up with it in the DVD/CD ROM drive. Anyway try it first, you can hit exit from in the recovery mode.

Yes you will be able to restore the machine to its original factory condition by using the Recovery Disks.
